Using Strengths

Tompkins Cortland Community College is committed to helping each student at the College explore the unique talents and abilities that make student success possible.

The College uses Gallup's StrengthsQuest (SQ) program to help discover their specific strengths, and can also help students learn how to apply those strengths to their academic, social, and professional lives.

As a strengths-based college, TC3 believes each student has unique talents that they bring to our community. Understanding your own talents and developing them into strengths can help you reach your goals, understand yourself and those around you, and become your best self.

All new students should complete StrengthsQuest prior to New Student Orientation.

You will need about 30-45 minutes of uninterrupted time to complete the SQ inventory effectively. The SQ questions are timed, and if you time out on too many questions (or select neutral too many times), your results may be impacted. If you are a student who usually receives extended time on tests, please email strengths@TC3.edu to request a code with the timer turned off. If English is not your first language, we recommend taking the inventory in your native language (many language options are available). Go with your gut reaction to the questions when answering for the most effective assessment of your strengths.

To take the StrengthsQuest inventory, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to myTC3
  2. Go to myINFO
  3. Select the StrengthsQuest link on the left menu
  4. Request a StrengthsQuest code
  5. Go to www.strengthsquest.com to register and complete the inventory
  6. Print and email your results, then attend your StrengthsQuest workshop during Orientation

For detailed instructions, access a StrengthsQuest presentation.

For continuing students who take StrengthsQuest and want to learn more about how to understand their strengths, workshops are offered throughout the semester. Sign up to attend a StrengthsQuest workshop here.

To continue learning more about your Strengths, check the Panther Passport calendar for upcoming specialized StrengthsQuest workshops. We offer Strengths Spotlights which focus on certain SQ themes, as well as workshops on using your strengths in relationships, academics, and your career.
