Appeal Process

STAGE ONE: The student should attempt an informal appeal with the instructor at the time of the initial sanction.

STAGE TWO: If an informal settlement cannot be reached, the student should contact the appropriate associate dean within five class days* and file a written appeal to the instructor’s decision. Notice of the associate dean’s decision shall be disclosed to the student and the faculty member within two class days after the decision has been made.

STAGE THREE: If a formal appeal to the associate dean does not satisfactorily resolve the situation, the student may, within five class days*, file with the academic dean a written appeal which includes additional and supporting information. Notice of the dean’s decision shall be disclosed to the student and the faculty member within two class days after the decision is made.

STAGE FOUR: The student shall have the right to appeal the academic dean’s decision by requesting of the dean of students, an appointment to appear before the college Disciplinary and Grievance Review Board (CDGRB). This would be done if the student considers the penalty to be unjust or unwarranted. Grounds for appeal include claims of bias, procedural infractions, and/or new evidence. The appeal to the dean of students must be in writing and must be filed within five class days* of the conclusion of stage three. The CDGRB will be constituted and guided in its procedures by the proscription for this board as outlined in the section in the student grievance process, subsection numbers 3 and 4.

* Five class days is a period of five days when the college is open for classes, not five class meetings of the course in which the incident of academic infraction occurred.
