Causes of Student Stress

Being a student means you have unique and specific stress inducers such as:

• Tests, papers, assignment deadlines, midterms and finals
• Pressure to make good grades
• Difficult courses
• Being away from home
• Uncomfortable, unfamiliar living arrangements
• Social pressures with meeting new people
• Feeling homesick, missing family support
• Managing your time for academics and social activities

Any one of the above can make you feel anxious, depressed or panicky. According to the American College Health Association, stress is still the number one obstacle to peak academic performance. Pressures from family, school, or yourself and your own expectations can exacerbate an already stressful situation.

Stress can show up in many different ways

• Impede concentration, making it hard to study or focus while in class
• Interfere with sleep, causing fatigue
• Cause muscle tension and pain...often in the neck, shoulders and lower-back
• Produce headaches
• Weaken the immune system making students more prone to illness
• Trigger irritability and negatively affect social relationships and interactions with instructors and peers
• Lead to anxiety and depression

One of the reasons people enjoy massage is because it involves caring and comfort and promotes a sense of empowerment. It's an important part of an overall stress management plan that helps you to let go and get a break from everything. All you have to do is come for your massage at the Health Center.
