Panthers Snap Skid at Columbia-Greene

TC3 volleyball

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team snapped a long winless streak Saturday, coming home from the Columbia-Green Pod with a win over the host team.

TC3 opened play Saturday falling to SUNY Adirondack in straight sets (25-9. 25-8, and 25-20). The second contest of the day was against Hudson Valley Community College. The Panthers took one set, but ended up losing 3-1 (25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 26-24). The breakthrough came in the final match of the day. After losing 12 straight matches, the Panthers swept Columbia-Greene (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) to earned their second win of the year. TC3’s record is now 2-12.

By the end of the day, Kasey Price (Cincinnatus H.S./Cincinnatus) had 13 kills, 10 aces, and four blocks for the Panthers. Shay Washington (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) had 10 kills and Elisabeth Olcott (Fabius-Pompey H.S./Fabius) had nine. Jess Meyer (New Roots H.S./Dryden) led the team with 22 digs, followed by Victoria Morse (Newark Valley H.S./Ithaca) with 19 digs. Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) handed out 35 assists.

TC3 is home Tuesday, hosting SUNY Delhi at 6 p.m.

Alfie Okaru

Head Coach

Alfie OkaruCoach Okaru joined the volleyball staff as an assistant coach in 2008 before being promoted to head coach in 2009. His teams have qualified for the Mid-State Athletic Conference playoffs three times, and in 2010 the Panthers made a return trip to the NJCAA Region III postseason. Coach Okaru brings an expertise in conditioning and fitness to the coaching staff, along with enthusiasm and dedication to the team. "Coach O" is also the recreation coordinator at the College.

The season came to an end for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team Saturday as the Panthers were swept in three matches. TC3 lost to Finger Lakes Community College, Monroe Community College, and the host team, Corning Community College to close the season with a record of 2-20.

The final home match of the season for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team ended with a straight set loss for the Panthers Wednesday. Hosting Jefferson Community College, TC3 lost by scores of 25-8, 25-10, and 25-14. The Panthers are now 2-17 on the season. Jefferson improves to 17-11.

The match was the final home contest for sophomores Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) and Anna Belcher (Dryden H.S./Cortland). The duo had strong performances, with Berry leading the team with four kills while also pulling out five digs and Belcher finishing with four digs and a kill. Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) had six digs and four assists and Ashley Morgan (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira) had six digs, one assist, and one kill.

The Panthers end the season playing at the Corning pod this weekend.


Road Loss for Panthers

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team dropped a road contest Wednesday, falling in straight sets to Finger Lakes Community College. The Panthers are now 2-16 on the season. Finger Lakes improves to 17-10.

Finger Lakes won in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-10. TC3 was led by Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) with eight digs, three kills, and a block. Anna Belcher (Dryden H.S./Cortland) and Mackenzie Congdon (Watkins Glen H.S./Watkins Glen) each had four digs and three kills, and Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) handed out nine assists.

The Panthers are off a week until they host Jefferson Community College on Wednesday, October 16.

The third set went to Erie 25-16, but the Panthers bounced back and took the fourth 25-18 to set up a decisive fifth set. In the fifth TC3 fell behind early and couldn’t recover, losing 15-9.

For the day, Anna Belcher (Dryden H.S./Cortland) led the team with nine kills. Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) had eight digs, five blocks, four kills, and three aces. Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) pulled out 13 digs and handed out six assists. Mackenzie Congdon (Watkins Glen H.S./Watkins Glen) had six digs and five kills.

The road wasn’t kind for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team Tuesday as the Panthers lost at SUNY Delhi. TC3 drops to 2-12 on the season while Delhi improves to 8-9.

TC3 lost by scores of 25-8, 25-11, and 25-21. Anna Belcher (Dryden H.S./Cortland) led the team with two kills to go along with four digs. Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) pulled out eight digs and handed out two assists. Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) had four digs, two blocks, and one kill.

The Panthers are home Saturday, hosting matches against Niagara County Community College, Jamestown Community College, and Erie Community College.

The slow start to the season continued Sunday for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team as the Panthers went 0-3 at the Fulton-Montgomery Community College pod. TC3 lost matches to Fulton-Montgomery, Herkimer County Community College, and Mohawk Valley Community College to drop to 0-9 on the season.

TC3 dropped all three matches in straight sets. The day opened against Herkimer with losses by the score of 25-11, 25-23, 25-11. The Mohawk Valley match ended with scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-12. The final match of the day had the closest scores, with Fulton-Montgomery topping TC3 27-25, 25-12, and 25-18.

By the end of the day Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) had 11 kills, eight digs, three blocks, and two aces. Shay Washington (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) also had 11 kills to go with five blocks, two aces, and two digs. Ashley Morgan (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira) had a team-best 30 assists, Anna Belcher (Dryden H.S./Dryden) had seven kills and two aces, and Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) had eight digs and two aces.

The slow start to the season continued Sunday for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team as the Panthers went 0-3 at the Fulton-Montgomery Community College pod. TC3 lost matches to Fulton-Montgomery, Herkimer County Community College, and Mohawk Valley Community College to drop to 0-9 on the season.

TC3 on the attack

A slow start set the tone in a bad way for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team Wednesday. The Panthers were held to just two points in the first set, leading to a straight set loss to Broome Community College (25-2, 25-19, 25-12). TC3 is now 0-6 while Broome improves to 7-4.

TC3 was led by Mackenzie Congdon (Watkins Glen H.S./Watkins Glen) with three digs and two kills. Shay Washington (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) had three kills and two blocks and Samantha Berry (Newfield H.S./Newfield) had two kills, a block, and a dig.

The Panthers travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College for more Region III pod play Sunday.

Panthers Overwhelmed at Home

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team’s home opener Wednesday turned out to be a disappointment as the Panthers lost in straight sets to a strong Corning Community College team Wednesday. Corning won by scores of 25-7, 25-1, and 25-8 to improve to 7-0 this season. TC3 drops to 0-2.

The visiting Red Barons started strong in each game, taking control early. TC3 trailed the entire night, with Corning jumping out to leads of 11-2, 11-1, and 11-2 in the three games, respectively.

Anna Belcher (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) had an ace and a kill for the Panthers. Rosa Oliveri (Liverpool H.S./Liverpool) had three digs.

The Panthers open Region III this weekend at the Onondaga Pod. The Panthers will play Onondaga Community College, Jefferson Community College, and Cayuga Community College.

The 2013 campaign got off to a rough start for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team as the Panthers lost in straight sets at Cayuga Community College Wednesday. Cayuga is now 1-1 after beating TC3 by scores of 25-11, 25-7, and 25-7.

Shay Washington (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) provided a bright spot for TC3 with three aces. Tanar Hser (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) had three digs and Cheyenne Smith (Groton H.S./Groton) had three assists.

The Panthers have a week to wait before taking to the floor again. TC3 hosts Corning Community College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
