Panthers Roll to Big Home Win

Saturday, November 18, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s basketball team didn’t take long to bounce back after its eight-game home-winning streak ended. Less than 24 hours after losing at home for the first time in nearly a year, the Panthers got back in the win column in convincing fashion, beating Clinton Community College 78-44 on Saturday. The Panthers are now 4-2 overall and 4-1 in Region III (Division III). Clinton stands at 1-5 overall and 0-5 in region.

The Panthers dominated from the opening tip, racing to a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead stood at 42-21 at the half and continued to grow in the third quarter when the Panthers outscored the Cougars 19-3.

Four Panthers scored in double figures as 11 of the 12 players dressed for the game scored. Taylor Day (Brooktondale/Ithaca H.S.) was the leading scorer with 18 points followed by MacKenzie Kenyon (Ovid/South Seneca H.S.) with 16. Jaida Washington (Elmira/Elmira H.S.) had 11 points to go with 9 rebounds and Shelby Koch (Auburn/Union Springs H.S.) chipped in with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and a team-best 5 assists.

The win sends the Panthers into Thanksgiving Break on a positive note. When the team returns to the court, they will be on the road for the next three games, starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving at Jefferson Community College.

Coaches–Women's Basketball

David Stevenson

Head Coach

Dave StevensonMSAC Coach of the Year
2010, 2013, 2014

Coach Stevenson enters his fourth season with the women's basketball program, following a similar track as he used during the most successful run in the history of the College's men's basketball program. In both cases, Stevenson inherited a program in need of rebuilding, and did so quickly. In 2016-17, the Panthers women's team posted the best winning percentage in over a decade, making playoffs for the second-straight year. During his decade directing the men's program, Coach Stevenson's teams established new records for wins, topping 20 victories three times, and won the Mid-State Athletic Conference championship three times (including his last two seasons). The goals for the women are similar, and the foundation is being laid.

Stevenson joined the men's basketball staff as an assistant in 2003-04, bringing a strong work ethic and knowledge of the game to the floor each night. He is well known for caring for his students both on and off the court, tracking academic progress as well as developing basketball skills. He has worked hard to bring quality players into the program, and to help those players continue their careers at the four-year level. In his time with the program, he has helped players earn scholarships to Mercy College in New York, Drake University in Iowa, and Avila University in Kansas. His former players have also shown up on the rosters at Buffalo State, Oneonta State, Oswego State, Old Westbury College, Morrisville State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, SUNY Fredonia, and Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire. A former standout athlete at Trumansburg High and a college baseball player, Coach Stevenson is Tompkins Cortland's assistant athletic director.
