Women's Soccer Knocks Off Defending National Champs

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer team ended the regular season on a high note by defeating the defending national champions Wednesday. Playing at home, the Panthers scored an early goal and made it stand in a 1-0 win over SUNY Broome. The win leaves Tompkins Cortland with a final regular season record of 10-5 overall, 9-5 in Region III, and 3-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Broome is now 8-6-1 overall, 7-6-1 in Region III, and 2-3-1 in the MSAC.

The lone goal came in the 13th minute of play, with Kelsey Clark (Homer H.S./Homer) tracking down a ball in the left side of the box and firing it past the Broome keeper. The Panthers threatened multiple times the rest of the way but couldn’t put one in the net the net, with shots instead finding the crossbar, the post, or being saved by a strong effort from the Broome keeper. By the final horn, Tompkins Cortland had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Kassie Murdock (Stillwater H.S./Stillwater) and Katie Slocum (Candor H.S./Candor) each played a half in goal, with Murdock posting three saves in the first half and Slocum recording one in the second.

Next up for the Panthers will be a return to the NJCAA Region III playoffs. Tournament brackets will be announced Sunday with first round games on Tuesday.

Coaches–Women's Soccer

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for five season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs four times, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 43 during his five years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

Emerson Caiza

Assistant Coach

Coach Caiza joined the Panthers staff for 2016, but his history at the College goes back much farther. He played for Tompkins Cortland in 2006 and 2007, earning all-conference honors both seasons and all-region honors in 2007 when the team won the MSAC and made it to the Region III semifinals. After graduating from Tompkins Cortland he went to Cortland State, where he continued his on-field success, helping the red Dragons to a SUNYAC title his first season on campus. A graduate of Ithaca High, Coach Caiza brings a calm demeanor and tremendous soccer insights to Coach Rice's staff.
