The 2014 NJCAA Region III women’s soccer playoffs got off to a thrilling start Saturday as the #12-seed Tompkins Cortland Community College pulled off an upset by eliminating #5-seed Onondaga Community College. The Panthers and Lazers were tied at 1-1 after two overtimes, and still tied after the first round of five penalty kicks where each team made all five kicks. TC3 prevailed in the sixth round, moving the team into Tuesday’s semifinal against #4-seed Hudson Valley Community College. The Panthers and Vikings will play at 3 p.m. on Hudson Valley’s campus in Troy.

Saturday’s game with Onondaga was tight from the start. The Panthers opened strong, earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening minute, but never putting a solid chance on goal. The Panthers best chance in the opening half came in the 12th minute. A long ball from the TC3 defense bounced over an Onondaga defender, and Hannah Wildenstein (Dryden H.S./Freeville) got the ball, but couldn’t control it enough to get a shot before the Onondaga keeper could come out and shut down the play. With the Panther defense holding strong while Onondaga led in shots, the score remained 0-0 at the half.

The second half saw an early chance for the Panthers. Lauren Klosterman (Wallkill H.S./Modena) made a good run and was able to slot the ball to Wildenstein, who again moved into a scoring position. This time she was able to get a shot off, but the Onondaga keeper was up to the task, making the save and keeper the game scoreless.

In the 71st minute, the scoreless tie was broken when Onondaga was able to play a nice pass to a forward that streaking past the defense. The Lazer put the shot away, making it 1-0 in favor the home team with 19:09 left on the clock. The lead was short lived, as it took less than two minutes for the Panthers to answer. Ciara Tallman (Cortland H.S./Cortland) started the play with a clear, which Devin Blanchard (Cincinnatus H.S./Cincinnatus) gathered and pushed along to Wildenstein. The sophomore got around the defense and was able to put a strong shot on goal, beating the Onondaga keeper, tying the game at 1-1, and sparking the Panthers. The goal with 17:19 left on the clock energized the Panthers, and the increased intensity led to a few chances in the final minutes, but none that found the net. The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation. Both teams had chances in overtime, but TC3 keeper Emma Augustine (Ellenville H.S./Ellenville) made some nice plays to keep the game knotted and send it into penalty kicks.

In the first round of five penalty kicks, both teams were perfect. Hannah Foederer (Pulaski H.S./Pulaski), Amanda DeGraff (Cortland H.S./Cortland), Wildenstein, Klosterman, and Ruthanne Forehand (Groton H.S./Groton) each converted, while five Lazers did the same. With the sixth kicker, Augustine came up huge, laying out to make the first save by either keeper. With the chance to end the game, Alexis McKinnon (Merced H.S./Merced, H.S.) delivered, putting her shot into the back of the net and setting off a celebration for the Panthers and the TC3 fans.
