Panthers Fall to Nation's Top Team

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Playing on the road against the top-ranked team in the nation Wednesday, the Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer team couldn’t keep up. The Panthers lost by a score of 4-0 to end the regular season with a record of 6-7-1 overall, 5-6-1 in Region III, and 3-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Broome is 15-1 overall, 15-0 in Region III, and 6-0 in the MSAC.

Broome took advantage early, scoring in the sixth minute of play and then again three minutes later. The Hornets made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute and then scored the final goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Tompkins Cortland keeper Molly Graves (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley) recorded 18 saves on the day.

With the regular season finished, the Panthers now await word on a possible NJCAA playoff bid. The seedings for the postseason tournament will be announced Saturday evening. Tompkins Cortland, a regional finalist last year, has made the postseason 11 straight years.

Coaches–Women's Soccer

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for four season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs each season, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 37 during his four years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

He played for Tompkins Cortland in 2006 and 2007, earning all-conference honors both seasons and all-region honors in 2007 when the team won the MSAC and made it to the Region III semifinals. After graduating from Tompkins Cortland he went to Cortland State, where he continued his on-field success, helping the red Dragons to a SUNYAC title his first season on campus. A graduate of Ithaca High, Coach Caiza brings a calm demeanor and tremendous soccer insights to Coach Rice's staff.

Panthers Post 3-1 Playoff Win

Saturday, October 19, 2013

Chelsy Kern

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women's soccer team is headed to the NJCAA Region III-B semifinals after posting a 3-1 win over North Country Community College Saturday. The #3-seed Panthers will now take on #2-SUNY Delhi Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Delhi.

The quarterfinal game against North Country started with a frustrating first half for the Panthers. Playing at home against the #6-seed Saints, Tompkins Cortland came painstakingly close on several chances in the opening 45 minutes, but the combination of strong play by the North Country keeper and misfires left it scoreless at the half.

The attack continued in the second half until finally breaking through with 38 minutes left on the clock. Hannah Wildenstein (Dryden H.S./Freeville) played a nice cross to the front of the goal, where Megan Reynolds (Chazy H.S./Chazy) finished the play to make it 1-0. The celebration was very short-lived, as North Country took the next possession down and scored just 18 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. More good chances were thwarted by the North Country keeper before Shelby Goodrich (Minisink Valley H.S./Otisville) fed Erika Faberzak (Cortland H.S./Cortland) at the top of the box for a clear shot past the keeper to return the lead to the Panthers with 28:55 on the clock. Tompkins Cortland keeper Chelsy Kern (Candor H.S./Candor) made a great save minutes later to preserve the lead before a Faberzak corner kick was headed in by Mercedes Kendall (Union-Endicott H.S./Endicott) to make it 3-1 with 22:36 left. Kern and the defense, led by Sara Sinnigen (Dryden H.S/Dryden) and Lindsey Hack (Chazy H.S./Chazy), kept the slate clean the rest of the way to close out the win.

Tompkins Cortland now takes on SUNY Delhi for the right to play for the Region III-B championship. The championship game will be held Saturday, October 26 at Tompkins Cortland.
