Panthers Can't Climb Out of First-Half Hole

Saturday, September 24, 2016

Tompkins Cortland Community College

A slow start that saw the Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer give up three goals proved to be too much to overcome as the Panthers dropped a 3-1 final to Onondaga Community College Saturday. The home loss leaves Tompkins Cortland at 2-5 overall, 2-4 in Region III, and 1-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Onondaga improves is 6-4 overall, 5-3 in Region III, and 3-2 in the MSAC.

The visiting Lazers opened the scoring with a goal with 20:44 left in the first half and added a second goal with 14:10 left. The third score came with 11 seconds left before the half, and sent the teams to the break with Onondaga up 3-0.

The Panthers got on the board with 26:42 left in the second, when Briana Sokol (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley) drilled a free kick into the net from 25 yards out, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The goal marked the first time the Panthers have scored since the September 7 game, a span of more than 315 minutes of play. The goal seemed to energize the home team, but the Panthers couldn’t capitalize, failing to put another past the Onondaga keeper.

Tompkins Cortland goalkeeper Molly Graves (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley) had eight saves.

The Panthers play at Mercyhurst North East Wednesday.

Coaches–Women's Soccer

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for four season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs each season, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 37 during his four years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

Emerson Caiza

Assistant Coach

Coach Caiza joins the Panthers staff for 2016, but he is no stranger to the College. He played for Tompkins Cortland in 2006 and 2007, earning all-conference honors both seasons and all-region honors in 2007 when the team won the MSAC and made it to the Region III semifinals. After graduating from Tompkins Cortland he went to Cortland State, where he continued his on-field success, helping the red Dragons to a SUNYAC title his first season on campus. A graduate of Ithaca High, Coach Caiza brings a calm demeanor and tremendous soccer insights to Coach Rice's staff.

Panthers Drop Home Game 3-1

Wednesday, October 02, 2013

TC3 sophomores

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women's soccer team saw its four-game unbeaten streak come to an end Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Alfred State College. The game marked the first time TC3’s soccer team has ever played against a four-year school during the regular season. The loss leaves TC3 with a record of 7-3-1 overall. Alfred State, which moved to the NCAA this year after competing as a two-year school in the past, improve to 7-2 with the win.

The games opened with the Panthers on the aggressive, pressuring the Alfred State defensive end. In the sixth minute of play, the Alfred State keeper makes a great save, coming out hard to deflect a shot by Shelby Goodrich (Minisink Valley H.S./Otisville). Minutes later, Erika Faberzak (Cortland H.S./Cortland) had a good chance, but fired wide of the goal. Alfred State capitalized on the ensuing possession, taking the ball down the field and scoring the first goal with 27:13 left in the first half. The second score came four minutes later on a nearly identical goal from the same Alfred State player.

The Panthers finally broke through early in the second half. Just into the 56th minute of play, Megan Reynolds (Chazy H.S./Chazy) scored off an assist from Goodrich to cut the deficit to 2-1. The goal seemed to energize the home team, but the surge over the next several minutes came up empty. The visitors scored an insurance goal with 13:09 left in the game, making the final 3-1.

TC3 returns to NJCAA play Saturday. The Panthers take to the road to play Jamestown Community College.
