Panthers Drop Opener in Overtime

Saturday, August 27, 2016

Tompkins Cortland Community College

A goal in the second minute of overtime was the lone score of the night as the Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer team dropped its 2016 season opener 1-0 to Holyoke Community College (Mass.). The home loss came on the first day of the NJCAA Northeast Cup Soccer Invitational.

The Panthers struggled to mount an offensive attack most of the night, but did put a strong run on the Holyoke goal in the closing seconds of regulation. The best chance of the night ended with a shot wide of the net, sending the game to extra time. The visiting Cougars ended the game with 8:15 left in overtime, punching a ball past Panthers keeper Molly Graves (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley) for the win.

Graves had a strong game, controlling the box and keeping a clean slate until the OT. The sophomore had six saves in the loss.

Next up for the Panthers is a Sunday game at 5:30 p.m. with Hudson Valley Community College. The Vikings opened the season Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Brookdale Community College (N.J.) in the first game of the invitational.

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for four season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs each season, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 37 during his four years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

Panthers Cap Regular Season with 8-0 Win; Host Playoff Game Saturday

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Hannah Foedererer

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women's soccer team capped its regular season with an 8-0 win over Cayuga Community College, giving the Panthers a new school record for goals in a season. The win means TC3 ends the regular season with a record of 9-4-1 overall, 5-2 in the Region III West Division, and 4-1-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. TC3 now advances to the NJCAA Region III playoffs. The Panthers host North Country Community College Saturday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the Region III-B tournament.

Against Cayuga, Shelby Goodrich (Minisink Valley H.S./Otisville) set the tone early, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. Mercedes Kendall (Union-Endicott H.S./Endicott) scored the first of her two goals two minutes later, heading in a ball of a corner kick from Hannah Wildenstein (Dryden H.S./Freeville) to make it 3-0. Hannah Wotherspoon (Onteora H.S./West Hurley) converted an assist from Toni Gray (Sandy Creek H.S./Sandy Creek) for a goal before Megan Reynolds (Chazy H.S./Chazy) got a goal to make it 5-0 25 minutes into the game. Brittany Richmond (Red Creek H.S./Red Creek) finished the first half scoring with a goal, making it 6-0 heading into the break.

Kendall scored her second goal of the game just 96 seconds into the second half, and Jami Sedlacek (Livingston Manor H.S./Livingston Manor) closed the scoring with a goal off an assist from Erika Faberzak (Cortland H.S./Cortland) minutes later to make the final 8-0. TC3 keepers Chelsy Kern (Candor H.S./Candor) and Emily Hilliker (Pulaski H.S./Pulaski) each played half of the game to secure the shutout.

TC3 now has 55 goals this season, the most ever in one season for a TC3 team. The Panthers broke the old record of 52 scored by the 1998 TC3 team.
