Panthers Snap Skid with Win at MNE

Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Tompkins Cortland Community College

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer snapped its four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win Wednesday at Mercyhurst North East. The victory improves Tompkins Cortland’s record to 3-5 overall while marking the team’s first win in three weeks. Mercyhurst North East, a Division I team, drops to 2-5 on the year.

It took the Panthers a little while to get going after the long bus ride, and the Saints took advantage by scoring the game’s first goal in the first half. Angela Martone (Candor H.S./Candor) scored the equalizer just a few minutes before halftime, with an assist from April Dunn (Odessa-Montour H.S./Alpine). The game-winner came with 30 minutes left in the second half, with Darien Meagley (Greene H.S./Greene) converting an assist from Cali Daly (Coventry/Coventry, Conn.).

Tompkins Cortland goalkeeper Kassie Murdock (Stillwater H.S./Stillwater), making her first collegiate start, earned the win with four saves.

The Panthers return home Saturday to host Jamestown Community College.

Coaches–Women's Soccer

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for four season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs each season, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 37 during his four years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

Emerson Caiza

Assistant Coach

Coach Caiza joins the Panthers staff for 2016, but he is no stranger to the College. He played for Tompkins Cortland in 2006 and 2007, earning all-conference honors both seasons and all-region honors in 2007 when the team won the MSAC and made it to the Region III semifinals. After graduating from Tompkins Cortland he went to Cortland State, where he continued his on-field success, helping the red Dragons to a SUNYAC title his first season on campus. A graduate of Ithaca High, Coach Caiza brings a calm demeanor and tremendous soccer insights to Coach Rice's staff.

TC3 Plays Nation's #1 to Draw

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Erika Faberzak on the attack

A battle of two teams ranked in the top five in the nation lived up to its billing Tuesday, as the #5-ranked Tompkins Cortland Community College women's soccer team played #1 Broome Community College to a 1-1 draw. After the second overtime the game went to a shootout, with the result to be used by the postseason seeding committee. TC3 won the shootout 4-2.

Broome entered the game with a record of 5-0, having outscored their opponents by a combined score of 35-0. The Hornets showed their offensive strength early, scoring in the second minute of play. After the score, TC3 settled down and the game was evenly played until Taylor Liebowitz (Emmaus H.S./Allentown, Penn.) worked a give-and-go with Erika Faberzak (Cortland H.S./Cortland) to tie the game in the 27th minute. The game remained 1-1 into the half.

The second half started much the same way the first did, with Broome scoring just moments into the action. But this time, TC3 answered quickly. Mercedes Kendall (Union-Endicott H.S./Endicott) fed Faberzak for the score, tying the game at 2-2. Despite playing 37 more minutes of regulation and another 20 in overtime, neither team was able to break the deadlock.

TC3 keeper Chelsy Kern (Candor H.S./Candor) was strong all game, recording 10 saves and making several strong plays. That continued in the shootout, where TC3 outscored the home team 4-2. Liebowitz, Faberzak, Sara Sinnigen (Dryden H.S./Dryden), and Megan Reynolds (Chazy H.S./Chazy) each scored in PKs for the Panthers.

TC3 hosts Erie Community College Saturday.
