Garrison Goal Gives Panthers 3-2 OT Win at Mohawk Valley

Sunday, October 15, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer team worked overtime Sunday, earning a big 3-2 win at Mohawk Valley Community College. The win guarantees a winning record for the season for the Panthers and goes a long ways toward securing a home game when the NJCAA Region III playoffs begin. Tompkins Cortland’s record is now 9-5 overall and 8-5 in Region III. Mohawk Valley drops to 5-8-1 overall and in region.

The win didn’t come easy. Mohawk Valley scored the only goal of the first half, forcing Tompkins Cortland to play from behind. The Panthers evened the score early in the second half on a goal by Kristen Frear (Lansing H.S./Ithaca) off an assist Sage Garrison (Odessa-Montour H.S./Odessa), but the Hawks regained the lead with a goal with 30 minutes left in the half. A minute later Serina Guilianti (Harrison H.S./Harrison) scored an unassisted goal to knot the score at 2-2. The deadlock held the rest of regulation, sending the Panthers into overtime for the second time this season. And for the second time, the Panthers were up to the challenge. This time it was Garrison scoring the game-winner, scoring off a direct-kick assist from Briana Sokol (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley).

Katie Slocum (Candor H.S./Candor) earned the win in goal with nine saves.

The Panthers close out the regular season Wednesday at home against SUNY Broome.

Coaches–Women's Soccer

Robert Rice

Head Coach

Robert Rice Coach Rice has led the Panthers for five season, and directed the team to the best season in program history in 2015. Tompkins Cortland advanced to the Region III championship game last year, continuing the steady climb for the program since Rice took over. He took over as head coach for the 2012 season after serving as the women's assistant for two years and men's assistant for four years. During his time with the Tompkins Cortland soccer programs, the Panthers have made the NJCAA playoffs four times, including reaching the Region III semifinals in both 2013 and 2014. He has been on the sidelines for over 100 wins for the Panthers, including 43 during his five years time as head coach.

In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Rice was the assistant coach on the College's softball team in 2011, helping the Panthers to a regional title and a third-place finish at the national tournament. He also served as Tompkins Cortland's head women's basketball coach from 2006-2008.

Coach Rice played soccer at Herkimer County Community College before receiving his bachelor's degree from Cortland State.

Emerson Caiza

Assistant Coach

Coach Caiza joined the Panthers staff for 2016, but his history at the College goes back much farther. He played for Tompkins Cortland in 2006 and 2007, earning all-conference honors both seasons and all-region honors in 2007 when the team won the MSAC and made it to the Region III semifinals. After graduating from Tompkins Cortland he went to Cortland State, where he continued his on-field success, helping the red Dragons to a SUNYAC title his first season on campus. A graduate of Ithaca High, Coach Caiza brings a calm demeanor and tremendous soccer insights to Coach Rice's staff.
