Panthers Upset at Home

TC3 soccer

Just a day after re-entering the NJCAA national rankings at #9, the Tompkins Cortland Community College men’s soccer team fell victim to an upset at home. The Panthers lost Wednesday to SUNY Broome by a final score of 2-1. TC3 ends the regular season with a record of 12-5 overall, 11-4 in Region III, and 3-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference while Broome is 4-12-1 overall, 4-11-1 in Region III, and 2-4 in the MSAC.

The game opened with the home team controlling play, but never putting the ball in the net. In the 19th minute of play, Broome made its first shot count, scoring on a long blast to take a 1-0 lead. The score held into the second half, when the Hornets added another goal in the 72nd minute. The Panthers finally got on board a minute later, with Nick Cowen (McGraw H.S./McGraw) feeding Morgan Shutter (Odessa-Montour H.S./Alpine) for a score to cut the deficit in half, but it was as close as the home team could get.

Panthers Seeded #5 for Playoffs

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to the #5 seed in the NJCAA Region III playoffs. TC3 will play at #4 Genesee Community College Tuesday. The winner will advance to the Region III A championship game November 1.

Andy Davis

Head Coach

Andy DavisRegion III Co-Coach of the Year
2013

MSAC Coach of the Year
2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013

Coach Davis has completed nine seasons directing the TC3 men's soccer program, compiling a record of 112-53-9 and nine consecutive regional playoff appearances. The 2013 season ranks as one of the best in nation, as TC3 went undefeated during the regular season, winning another Mid-State Athletic Conference championship and advancing to the Region III championship game. Coach Davis was named the Region III Co-Coach of the Year and the MSAC Coach of the Year, and seven players were honored with all-conference, region, and/or all-American recognition.

2013 was the latest chapter in what has been an amazingly successful book for Davis. After spending 2004 as the top assistant, Davis took control of the program in 2005. His first year saw the Panthers win the MSAC title, advance to the NJCAA Region III semifinals, and finish the year ranked 14th in the nation. The 2006 campaign saw a return to the NJCAA playoffs and a national ranking as high as eighth. In 2007 the Panthers again claimed the conference title and played their way to the regional semifinals. In 2008 TC3 posted a win over nationally-ranked Genesee in the opening round of the playoffs to again advance to the quarterfinals. The 2009 season saw the Panthers win two playoff games to advance to the Region III Final Four. In 2010, after winning another MSAC title, the team made it all the way to the Region III championship game. 2011 saw the Panthers again advance to the regional title game, posting a seven-game unbeaten streak along the way. A fourth MSAC Coach of the Year award and another Region III final four appearance came in 2012.

Coach Davis brings tremendous credentials to the program, both as a player and a coach. An all-state player at Binghamton High, he was an All-American and national player of the year while leading Herkimer County Community College to the 2000 national championship. He earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Evansville (NCAA- Division I) before finishing his playing career at SUNY Cortland. As a Red Dragon, he helped the team to their first SUNYAC title in nearly a decade. Prior to coming to TC3, he served as an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland for two seasons, helping coach the team to SUNYAC titles both seasons.

The last two seasons, Coach Davis has worked with the Greater Binghamton Futbol Club, a member of the National Premier Soccer League. He serves as the assistant coach for the Thunder, which won the NPSL Keystone Conference in 2013.

Coach McDaniel returns to the sideline for a second season as an assistant with the men's team after seven years directing the women's program. His teams won the MSAC title and consistently contended for the regional title. He has coached six All-Americans and two dozen all-region performers.

Prior to taking over the women's team, McDaniel was the first head coach of the men's program. He led the men's team for 10 years, taking the Panthers to the Regional Final Four and winning the MSAC title during his tenure.

PK Goal Gives Panthers Home Win

Saturday, September 06, 2014

TC3 soccer

The Tompkins Cortland Community College men’s soccer team overcame another slow start Saturday, scoring in the second half to post a 1-0 win over Clinton Community College. The home victory improves the Panthers to 3-1 on the season. Clinton drops to 1-2.

For the second straight game, the Panthers offense couldn’t produce in the first half. And for the second straight game, a penalty kick get the home team on the board. Just like on Wednesday night, a foul on Morgan Shutter (Odessa-Montour H.S./Alpine) in the box earned TC3 a penalty kick that James Demshick (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh) converted, this time giving TC3 the lead in the 48th minute. Each team had chances the rest of the way, with Clinton even earning a penalty kick with 9:06 left in the game, but neither team could score.

TC3 keeper McZiggy Richards (School for Human Rights/Brooklyn) earned the shutout, registering three saves.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Panthers: TC3 hosts North Country Community College Sunday at noon.
