Three Named All-Region

May 24, 2017

Three Tompkins Cortland Community College players have earned spots on the NJCAA Region III all-region team, the most ever in the history of the program. In voting by the coaches in the region, Nicholas Daigle (Warwick Valley H.S./Warwick), Chris Polanco (White Plains H.S./White Plains), and Jonny Phillips (Cortland H.S./Cortland) were each voted to the second team.

Daigle and Polanco were also voted to the Mid-State Athletic Conference all-conference team after tying for the team lead in scoring, each finishing with 51 points.

Phillips, a freshman defender, anchored a defense that was among the stiffest in the region. He and Daigle were also voted to the Region III Championships all-tournament team.

The Panthers have now had representation on the Region III all-region team in four consecutive years and five of the last six years. In each of those years, the national champion has come from Region III.

Four Tompkins Cortland Community College players have earned spots on the Mid-State Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse all-conference team. In voting by the coaches from the five MSAC programs, Nicholas Daigle (Warwick Valley H.S./Warwick), Chris Polanco (White Plains H.S./White Plains), Duran Joyce (Dryden H.S./Dryden), and Peter Tortorici (Deer Park H.S./Deer Park) were one of the 20 named to the team. The four represent the most all-conference selections in a year in the history of Tompkins Cortland’s lacrosse program.

Daigle and Polanco tied for the team lead in scoring, each finishing with 51 points. Daigle, a sophomore attacker, had 38 goals and a team-best 13 assists. He scored in every game and had a season-best 10 points against Jefferson Community College. He also had six points for a season high, doing so twice, against Ocean County College and against Finger Lakes Community College. Tortorici, a sophomore attacker, was one of the top face-off specialists in the conference. He also scored four points for the Panthers, including a two-point effort vs. Union County College.

Conference champion Onondaga Community College led all programs with eight all-conference selections. Early Lead Evaporates in Loss

Saturday, April 10, 2010

A 9-5 second-half scoring deficit kept the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team from recording its first win of the season as the Panthers lost to Finger Lakes Community College 13-11 Saturday. Tompkins Cortland drops to 0-8 while Finger Lakes improves to 2-11.
The Panthers outscored Finger Lakes 3-2 in each of the first two quarters. Zach McMullin (Homer H.S./Homer) opened the scoring, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first four minutes. Finger Lakes cut the lead in half with nine minutes left, but Kellen Simmons (Corning East H.S./Corning) pushed the lead back to two with a score with 1:38 left in the quarter. Another Finger Lakes score in the closing moments made it 3-2 after one quarter.
Two Finger Lakes scores in the first 65 second of the second quarter gave the visitors a 4-3 lead, but the Panthers tied it on a McMullin score a minute later. Shane Wilson (Holland Patent H.S./Watertown) put the Panthers back in the lead, and Simmons made it a three-goal run for the Panthers, scoring a man-up goal to make it 6-4 midway through the period. The lead held at two into halftime, the first time this season the Panthers have held a halftime advantage.
Tompkins Cortland's Greg Kiernan (Homer H.S./Homer) scored to make it 7-4 early in the third, but Finger Lakes responded with a four-goal run to take an 8-7 lead. McMullin snapped the run, tying the game at 8-8 with two minutes left in the quarter. Despite scoring chances for each team, the score remained tied at 8-8 at the end of the quarter.
The two teams traded goals twice to make it 10-10, as Kiernan and Simmons put the ball in the net for the Panthers. Finger Lakes moved ahead 12-10 before McMullin made it a one-goal game with 6:15 left. A Finger Lakes score moments later gave the visitors a two-goal cushion, and made the final 13-11. McMullin led the Panthers with five goals, with Simmons tallying three goals and two assists. Kiernan ended up with two goals and an assist, Wilson had a goal, and Trevor Caughey (Homer H.S./Homer) had two assists for the Panthers. J.P. Gove (Schuylerville H.S./Gansevoort) had 12 saves in goal. Tompkins Cortland travels to Jefferson Community College Tuesday.
