Panthers Win Road Game Over Nationally Ranked Team

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team went on the road Wednesday, and came home with a huge win over a nationally ranked team. Playing at #10-ranked Hudson Valley Community College, the Panthers jumped ahead early and stayed in front the entire way, winning 14-10. The win improves Tompkins Cortland to 3-2 overall and in Region III. Hudson Valley falls to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Region III.

The Panthers set the tone early, scoring the first three goals. Duran Joyce (Dryden H.S./Dryden) got the scoring started with a goal with 8:52 left in the first. Two goals from Nicholas Daigle (Warwick Valley H.S./Warwick) made it 3-0 before Hudson Valley could respond. Over the final 2:34 the teams traded goals twice, making the score 5-2 at the first break. The lead held at either two or three goals most of the second quarter, but Hudson Valley managed to pull within one at 7-6 before a late Panthers goal sent the game to the half with the visitors ahead 8-6.

The third quarter proved to be the decisive quarter, with Tompkins Cortland outscoring Hudson Valley 5-1 to lead 13-7. The Vikings made a run, pulling within three at 13-10 with 3:05 left, but the Panthers scored the game’s last goal with 1:37 left to make the final score 14-10.

The balanced attack saw five different player score goals, including three that had hat-tricks. Chris Polanco (White Plains H.S./White Plains) finished with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Daigle had six points on four goals and two assists. Bailey Wood (Homer H.S./Cortland) had three goals and Joyce ended the day with two goals and an assist. Jack Collmer (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill H.S./Vernon) added a goal and Jonny Phillips (Cortland H.S./Cortland) had an assist. Willie Wilson (Geneva H.S./Geneva) earned the win in goal with 22 saves.

The Panthers return home Saturday to host the nation’s top-ranked team, Onondaga Community College. The noon face-off will mark the fourth nationally ranked team the Panthers have faced this season.

Strong Showing in Defeat for Panthers

Thursday, April 17, 2014

Tompkins Cortland lacrosse

After falling behind big early, the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team showed tremendous grit and determination, nearly rallying all the way back before falling 15-12 to nationally-ranked SUNY Delhi Thursday. The loss leaves Tompkins Cortland with a record of 4-9 overall and 1-4 in Region III East Division play. Delhi, ranked #7 in the nation, is 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the East Division.

To say the Panthers started slowly would be a huge understatement. The visiting Broncos scored early and often, racing to a 5-0 lead that grew to 9-1 before settling at 11-4 after the first quarter. The Panthers outscored the Broncos in both the second and third quarters, bringing the score to 13-10 heading into the final 15 minutes. In the fourth, the Panthers continued the pressure, but couldn’t cut into the lead anymore. The two teams traded goals twice over the final four minutes to make the final 15-12.

After the opening quarter, the Tompkins Cortland defense tightened and the entire team stepped up. Goalie Eh Tha Dah (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) finished with 18 saves and several standout plays. Orazio Ciaschi (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) led the offense with four goals and two assists. Austin Recor (Homer H.S./Homer) was right behind him with four goals and one assist, and Max Bosworth (Keene H.S./Keene, N.H.) and Nick Velazquez (Middletown H.S./Middletown) each had two goals. Josh Maxson (Homer H.S./Homer) and Jorge Berenguer (Sleepy Hollow H.S./Sleepy Hollow) each had an assist.

The Panthers end the regular season Saturday at Herkimer County Community College.
