Panthers Roll to Big Win

Saturday, March 25, 2017

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse took little time to warm up as the Panthers scored early and often while beating Mercyhurst North East 20-7 Saturday. With the win, Tompkins Cortland is now 2-1 overall and in Region III. Mercyhurt North East is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Region III.

The Panthers scored the first goal just 19 seconds into the game, with Nicholas Daigle (Warwick Valley H.S./Warwick) finding the net. After Mercyhurt North East tied the game two minutes later, Bailey Wood (Homer H.S./Cortland) led Tompkins Cortland back ahead. After Daigle scored off an assist from Wood, the visiting Saints scored to cut the lead to 3-2 with 4:27 left in the opening quarter. It was the closest the game would get as the Panthers scored four times over the final 4:17 of the quarter and then opened the second quarter by scoring six straight to lead 13-2. A late goal by Mercyhurst made it 13-3 at the half, but the Panthers scored four straight to start the third and seal the win. Each team scored three times in the fourth to make the final 20-7.

It was a big day for the Panthers offense as the final score marked just the fourth time in program history the Panthers have reached 20 goals in a game. Wood led the way with six goals and two assists with Daigle one point behind him with five goals and two assists. Chris Polanco (White Plains H.S./White Plains) also scored five goals while Jack Collmer (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill H.S./Vernon) found the net twice. Duran Joyce (Dryden H.S./Dryden) and Matt Bisono (Deer Park H.S./Deer Park) each had a goal, and Jonny Phillips (Cortland H.S./Cortland) had an assist.

Three Panthers saw time in goal, with the win going to starter Willie Wilson (Geneva H.S./Geneva).

After not playing in two weeks, it’s now a quick turnaround for the Panthers – the team plays at Monroe Community College Sunday. Faceoff is at 2 p.m.

Coaches–Men's Lacrosse

Zach McMullin

Head Coach

Zach McMullen

Coach McMullin has finished five seasons with the Panthers, including three as head coach. He has been involved in all aspects of the program and has been largely responsible for the growth of the program, which has included playoff appearances three of the last four seasons.

Coach McMullin brings valuable experience as both a player and coach, having been a standout player both in high school and at Tompkins Cortland. During his time in a Panthers uniform he showed a tremendous ability to put the ball in the net, scoring 21 goals in just seven games. As a coach, he exudes the same energy he brought to the field as a player, helping the team and each player reach their potential on and off the field.
