Panthers Drop Two to Nation's #6

Sunday, April 23, 2017

For the second straight day, the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team played well, but not quite well enough to upset the #6-ranked team in the nation. Playing at Niagara County Community College on Sunday, the Panthers lost by scores of 4-0 and 3-0. Tompkins Cortland is now 8-14 overall and 3-9 in the West Division. Niagara improves to 26-6 overall and 13-0 in the West Division.

Derek Beeching (Brookfield H.S./Waterville) was the hard-luck loser in game one. The righty threw four innings, allowing four runs, all unearned. Offensively the Panthers failed to come up with a clutch hit, scattering eight hits and two walks over seven innings without scoring a run. Eric Arcangel (Bronx) was the lone Panther with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 on the day.

Game two again saw strong pitching go to waste, as four Panthers combined to allow just three hits and one earned run, with starter Nikolai Grihin (Homer H.S./Homer) after allowing two unearned runs over the first three innings. It was more than enough for the Thunderwolves as Niagara pitching overmatched the Panthers in game two. Tompkins Cortland batters managed just one hit – a double by Charlie Hammel (Rush-Henrietta H.S./Rochester) – while striking out 10 times.

Tompkins Cortland looks to get back on track this week against Jamestown Community College, with a home doubleheader on Tuesday and a road doubleheader on Thursday.

Coaches–Men's Baseball

Ryan Stevens

Head Coach

Ryan Stevens

Ryan Stevens has finished two seasons as head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at Tompkins Cortland from 2006 to 2010, took over as head coach for the 2014-15 academic year. His teams have shown steady progress and the program is poised to take the next step.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career during his first stint at Tompkins Cortland. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and posting an overall record of 208-119. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball, including one, Jonathan Edwards, who is on a major league roster (Texas Rangers, pitcher). Two other of his players signed contracts with Major League affiliates: David Valesente (Pittsburgh Pirates organization, catcher) and Andrew Wall (Washington Nationals organization, pitcher).

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

Billy Crowe

Assistant Coach

2017 is Crowe's third year on the coaching staff, working with the catchers and infielders. A conference all star while at Bath-Haverling High, Crowe played two seasons at Tompkins Cortland, earning all-MSAC honors before finishing his collegiate career at Virginia Wesleyan University. He played professionally for two seasons under Coach Stevens with the Alpine Cowboys and coached at Cox High in Virginia Beach before joining the Panthers staff.
