Stevens Named Head Baseball Coach

July 23, 2014

New TC3 head coach Ryan Stevens, manager of the professional team Alpine Cowboys, flanked by TC3 alums Dustin Sandberg and Billy Crowe

Ryan Stevens is returning to Tompkins Cortland Community College as the new head baseball coach. Stevens, who was an assistant at TC3 from 2006 to 2010, replaces Pat Carroll. Carroll is leaving TC3 after eight seasons for a coaching position at Siena College, an NCAA Division I program in New York’s Capital Region.

Stevens has built an impressive resume since starting his coaching career at TC3. While on the Dryden campus he was the Panthers’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, helping build a brand new program into a playoff team. His time at the College coincides with the best four-year stretch in the program’s history, culminating with an NJCAA regional playoff appearance in his final season.

In 2008 he entered the world of professional baseball, taking a job with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Independent Professional Continental Baseball league. After two years and a league championship with the Gunslingers, Stevens took his first head coaching job with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, an independent professional league based in Texas with teams through the southwest. In five seasons as the manager of the Cowboys, Stevens has led the team to the postseason each year, capturing two league championships and winning more than 200 games. He was named the Pecos League Manager of the Year, and has helped more than 50 players earn promotions to higher levels of professional baseball.

"Coach Stevens has proven to be a winner at every level, including the professional ranks, and I’m looking forward to him bringing that experience to our program. With his knowledge of the game, his passion for helping athletes succeed, and his commitment to hard work, he is exactly the right person to move TC3 baseball ahead," said TC3 Director of Athletics Mick McDaniel. "It’s a good fit: Ryan is a TC3 guy with tremendous regional and national connections. When the position was posted in early July, I had several local baseball icons call and urge me to give Ryan a chance at the helm of the Panthers. This was an easy decision. We are extremely excited to have Coach Stevens back in a Panther uniform."

Stevens, who also worked as an associate scout in the West Texas region for the Washington Nationals, served as an assistant coach at Ithaca College during the 2013-14 school year. He is a Dryden native, graduating from Dryden High before playing collegiate baseball at SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University (Maryland).

Pfund Adds All-Region Honors

June 12, 2014

For the fourth time in the last five years, Tompkins Cortland Community College has an all-region baseball player. Sophomore Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) was chosen to the all-region team by coaches in the NJCAA Region III.

Pfund was also named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference all-conference team. He started all 32 games for the Panthers, primarily as the team’s center fielder and lead-off hitter. He hit a team-best .365 with a slugging percentage of .552. He had five assists from the outfield, the most on the team, to go with 80 putouts. Between runs scored and runs batted in, he had a role in more than a third of TC3’s runs.

Pfund is the fifth TC3 player named all region since baseball was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2007.

Pfund Named All-Conference

June 5, 2014

Tompkins Cortland Community College sophomore Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) has been named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference all-conference baseball team. He was the lone TC3 selection to the 15-player team. Voting was done by the coaches from the six conference teams.

Pfund was TC3’s center fielder and lead-off hitter, starting in all 32 games. He led the Panthers in several offensive categories, including batting average (.365), hits (35), doubles (8), triple (2), home runs (2), stolen bases (9), slugging percentage (.552), and on-base percentage (.419). He scored nearly a quarter of TC3’s runs, crossing the plate 24 times (the team total was 101). He also drove in 15, the second most on the team.

It’s the eighth straight year TC3 has been represented on the all-conference team.
