Organizational Team Meeting September 2

TC3 Student-Athletes Receive National Academic Honors

July 9, 2014

Four Tompkins Cortland Community College student-athletes have been honored with a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic Student-Athlete Award. Taylor Policay (Lansing H.S./Ithaca), Kyle Shaw (Groton H.S./Groton), Sara Sinnigen (Dryden H.S./Dryden), and Hannah Wildenstein (Dryden H.S./Freeville) were each presented with the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement. The award, which was previously known as the NJCAA Academic All-American award, requires a minimum grade point average of 3.6. Only three percent of the nearly 60,000 student-athletes competing in the NJCAA this year received the designation.

Policay was a member of both the women’s basketball and softball teams. She completed her sport management degree in May, graduating with a GPA of 3.76. On the softball diamond she earned all-conference honors after a stellar freshman season that saw her blast nine home runs, including a TC3-record two in one playoff game. Over two seasons at TC3, she started 58 of 59 softball games, leading the team in slugging percentage during that time. On the basketball court she started 17 of 22 games, averaging more than three points and six rebounds per contest.

Shaw golfed for TC3, qualifying for the NJCAA national tournament in both his freshman and sophomore years. He was the team’s top scorer, and completed his academic work in business administration in May, graduating with a GPA of 3.61.

A captain on the women’s soccer team, Sinnigen was a two-time all-conference selection, an NJCAA all-region choice, and an NSCAA All-American for the Panthers. A liberal arts and sciences major, she completed her coursework with a GPA of 3.71.

Wildenstein, the lone first-year student among TC3’s honorees, was also a member of the women’s soccer team. She started 11 games and has a GPA of 3.70 in business administration.

TC3 Represented by Two on All-MSAC Team

June 5, 2014

Two Tompkins Cortland Community College softball players have been named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference all-conference softball team. Sophomore Angela Everhart (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) and freshman Kailyn Andrews (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) were among the 16 selected to the team. Voting was done by the coaches from the seven conference teams.

Everhart was one of TC3’s top offensive threats all season, leading the team with 25 RBI while batting .412, third best on the squad. She hit three home runs, tied for second most on the team, and had a slugging percentage of .562.

Andrews had TC3’s best on-base percentage at .562 and the second-best batting average at .475. She hit ten doubles and had a slugging percentage of .639, both the second best on the team.

It’s the eighth straight year TC3 has placed at least two players on the all-conference team.

TC3 Eliminated from Playoffs

TC3 softball

The Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team was eliminated from the NJCAA Region III playoffs Tuesday with an 8-3 loss to Corning Community College. The defeat in the first round of the playoffs ends TC3’s season with an overall record of 13-13. Corning, the region’s top-seed, advances to the Region III-A championship vs. Monroe Community College Friday. The championship series is hosted by TC3, and played at Cornell University.

The game opened with a scoreless first inning, but Corning took advantage of a TC3 error in the second to score two runs and take the early lead. The Panthers answered in the third, with Rebecca Trexler (Altmar-Parish-Williamstown H.S./Parish) opening the frame with a great at bat, working a ten-pitch walk after falling behind 0-2. After fielder’s choice produced an out, singles by Kaitlyn Edsall (Whitney Point H.S./Whitney Point) and Karrie Snyder (Newfield H.S./Newfield) loaded the bases. A pop out produced the second out, but Ruthanne Forehand (Groton H.S./Groton) came through with a big hit, a single that scored two runs to tie the game.

The tie didn’t last long, as the first Corning batter in the bottom of the inning homered to make it 3-2. The Red Barons added three more runs, all unearned after another Panther error, to move ahead 6-2. Both teams threatened but didn’t score in the fourth and fifth, sending the game to the sixth still 6-2.

In the sixth, Trexler again sparked a rally, ripping a double with two-outs. Sara Ford (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) delivered the run, driving in Trexler with a single to cut the deficit to 6-3. But any chance the Panthers had for a rally left when another TC3 error in the bottom of the inning allowed two more unearned runs to score, making the score 8-3. A scoreless seventh made the score hold, ending the TC3 season short of the regional final for the first time since 2008.

Ford led the offense by going 2-for-3, while Snyder and Forehand each went 2-for-4. Ford and Forehand split time on the mound, with each allowing just a single earned run.
