 2012 Highlights
Dryden—A pair of lopsided wins Sunday helped the Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team establish a new single-season record for runs. The Panthers, the top-ranked team in Region III, beat Onondaga Community College 22-1 and 16-0 to improve to 24-2 overall and 14-0 in region. Onondaga, the fifth-ranked team in the region, is now 14-6 overall and in region.
With the wins, TC3 has now scored 297 runs this season, an average of better than 11 per game. The 2012 Panthers have also set a new record for doubles. The team hit six on Sunday to reach 73 for the season, passing the old record of 68 set last year.
In Sunday's opener, the Panthers scored seven in the first inning, two in the second, 11 in the third, and two more in the fourth. Nine different Panthers recorded a hit, led by a 4-for-4 effort from Tayler Fravel (Sandy Creek H.S./Sandy Creek). Fravel had a pair of doubles, scored three runs, and drove in four as the start of a huge day. Katie Huston (Chenango Valley H.S./Binghamton) also drove in four, and Kaitlyn Massett (C.W. Baker H.S./Syracuse) and Karrie Snyder (Newfield H.S./Newfield) each drove in three, Snyder's coming on a three-run homer. Mackenzie Sherlock (Paul V. Moore H.S./Central Square) earned the win, allowing just three hits while striking out six.
In game two, Kristan Baker (Dallas H.S./Dallas, Penn.) took her turn putting her name in the record book. She homered and went 2-for-2 with five RBI. She now has a TC3-record 48 RBI this season, passing the old standard of 44 set by Brooke Wierzbicki in 2010.
Fravel picked up where she left off in the opener, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored to finish the afternoon a perfect 7-for-7 with six runs scored, five RBI, and two doubles. She has 50 hits this season and 107 for her career, just the third Panther to ever reach 100 hits.
Emilie Rogers (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira) pitched another gem, striking out 11 in five innings. She improves to 11-0 this year and dropped her ERA to 0.90.
TC3 plays at Fulton-Montgomery Community College Tuesday.
