Panthers Drop Regular Season Finale
Dryden—The Tompkins Cortland Community College men's basketball team dropped its regular season finale Saturday, falling to Cayuga Community College 92-79. The Panthers end the regular season with an overall record of 12-12 and a Mid-State Athletic Conference record of 7-5. Cayuga is 13-13 overall and 9-3 in MSAC.
After being unable to hold an early lead, the Panthers fell behind 44-37 at the half. In the second half, the Panthers were able to come back to tie the game three times, but the home team could never recapture the lead.
In the end, TC3 was unable to overcome a huge deficit at the free throw line. Cayuga attempted 36 free throws, connecting on 29. By comparison, the Panthers went to the charity stripe just 18 times, making only 10.
Tyrone Clark (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira) was one of five Panthers in double-figures, connecting on three three-pointers en route to 11 points. Clark now has made 100 three-pointers during his career at TC3, just the seventh Panther ever to reach that milestone. Clark also added six assists and two steals.
Floyd Leroy (Albert Magnus H.S./Spring Valley) led the Panthers with 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Brandon Reed (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse) had 12 points and seven boards, and Damani Ashton (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon) and James Tucker (Saratoga Springs H.S./Saratoga Springs) each netted 10 points. Jailaan Kinsey (Jamesville-Dewitt H.S./Dewitt) finished with nine points and six assists.
With the result of the game, Cayuga is the MSAC regular season champs and TC3 finishes in a three-way tie for second with Onondaga Community College and Jefferson Community College. All four teams advance to the conference tournament next weekend at Cayuga Community College. TC3, the #4 seed due to tiebreakers, will play against Cayuga at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game.
