TC3's Hoffman Signs Contract with Random House Division for Latest NovelDRYDEN, N.Y. – Tompkins Cortland Community College English Instructor Cara Hoffman has signed a six-figure deal for publication of her novel, So Much Pretty, with Shaye Areheart Books at Random House. 
 
The novel is a work of literary noir about a young woman's disappearance from a rural New York town, an event that exposes the community's failure to acknowledge a murderer in their midst. Publication date is Spring 2011.
 
Hoffman, a former newspaper journalist, based her novel on experiences she had living in Central New York and working as a reporter.
 
"My inspiration for this novel," she said, "comes from a desire to expose the prevalence of violence against women, to show all the intimate details that comprise a culture of misogyny and silence we often take for granted." 
 
Hoffman had a non-traditional education. She dropped out of high school and spent her adolescence traveling and working in Greece and the Middle East. She returned home in the 90s and, while raising her son, took various jobs at community newspapers before being hired as county reporter for The Cortland Standard. During this time she also published two books on a small press and won several grants and awards for her fiction.
 
"I had no desire to ever go to school." Hoffman said. "I knew I wanted to be a writer and I figured the best education would be reading and working in that field."
 
Hoffman began what has grown to be a strong connection to TC3 when she met English professor Phil Tate in 2004. He connected her with Professor Lisa Ford, chair of the creative writing program. Ford invited Hoffman, who had just published her first novel NIKE, to come to the College as part of the new "visiting writer" program. Later she interned in Bruce Need's academic writing class.
 
The experience helped change the path of her life.
 
"I was amazed by the dedication of Lisa's writing students, and by the work she was doing with them," said Hoffman. "And I could relate to their experiences. My resistance to the idea of getting a degree began to change. I wanted to be a professor and I couldn't do it without the diploma." She applied to Goddard College's Master of Fine Arts Program, graduated in June 2009, and was hired to teach English at TC3.  
 
"One of the reasons I love teaching here is because my students bring so much to the table. They refuse to be limited by background or life's circumstances, and they're incredibly self-reliant, down-to-earth, and funny. TC3 students are some of the hardest working, most (real-world) worldly college kids in the region. All of us who teach here are lucky."

TC3 Places Four on Men's Soccer All-Region TeamDRYDEN, N.Y. – Four TC3 men's soccer players have been named to the NJCAA Region III all-region team for 2009. Midfielder Salar Ahmad (Binghamton H.S./Disoldov, Germany) and forward Brandon Kohler (Minisink Valley H.S./Westtown) were voted to the first team. Forward Magor Mbengue (International H.S./Bronx) and defender Oliver Harwood (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) made the second team. A total of 26 players were honored. Voting is done by the coaches from the 20 Region III Division III soccer programs. 
 
Ahmad was third in scoring for the Panthers, finishing the season with 16 points on eight goals and four assists. Kohler tallied 24 points on nine goals and six assists, including an assist in the playoff win over Fulton-Montgomery. Mbengue joined the Panthers after the start of the season, but made a big impact, leading the team in scoring with 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. Defender Harwood had a single goal while leading a defense that helped the Panthers to the regional final four. 
 
This year marks the 12th consecutive season that TC3 has had a representative on the all-region team, with ten of those years seeing the Panthers with multiple selections.

TC3 Places Two on Women's Soccer All-Region TeamDRYDEN, N.Y. – Two TC3 women's soccer players have been named to the NJCAA Region III all-region team for 2009. Defender Monica Sacco (Union Springs H.S./Union Springs) and striker Courtney Henry (Thousand Islands H.S./Clayton) were honored. A total of 26 players were honored. Voting is done by the coaches from the 20 Region III Division III soccer programs. 
 
It was the second year that Sacco, a sophomore, was recognized with all-region honors. A first team selection in 2009, she helped lead a defense that allowed two or fewer goals in 13 of 19 games. Henry, a freshman, made the second team. She recorded a team-best 34 points on 15 goals and four assists.    
 
It's the fifth straight year TC3 has had multiple selections to the all-region team.

TC3 Men's Soccer Player Named Conference Player of the YearFour Panthers Named All-MSACDRYDEN, N.Y. – Tompkins Cortland Community College sophomore Salar Ahmad (Binghamton H.S./Disoldov, Germany) has been named the Mid-State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year. He is joined by three fellow Panthers on the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) men's soccer all conference team. In addition to Ahmad, sophomores Brandon Kohler (Minisink Valley H.S./Westtown), Jean-Pierre Rosas (Ithaca H.S./Guayaguil, Ecuador), and Oliver Harwood (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) were among the 20 players named to the all-conference team. Voting for the all-conference awards is done by the coaches from the seven MSAC soccer programs. Broome Community College, the conference champions, had the most selected to the team with five players. Onondaga Community College had four, followed by two each from Cayuga Community College, Finger Lakes Community, and Corning Community College. Jefferson Community College had one selection.

Local Students Earn TC3 Honors College ScholarshipsDRYDEN, N.Y. – Nine local students have earned Honors College Scholarships at TC3. The award, which covers tuition and fees, is available to top students from the school districts in Tompkins and Cortland Counties.
 
 The TC3 Honors College was formed three years ago as an expansion of the previous honors program. To be accepted into the Honors College, a student must meet strict academic standards, including graduating in the top 15% of their senior class and graduating with a GPA of at least a 90 average. Applicants are also required to submit SAT scores, letters of reference, and complete an essay.
 
Students in the Honors College complete honors classes, which are smaller and require more student participation than traditional offerings. Completion of the program brings an Honors College degree, which will afford graduates additional transfer opportunities.

TC3 Women's Soccer Places Three on All-MSACDRYDEN, N.Y. – The TC3 women's soccer team placed three players on the Mid-State Athletic Conference All-Conference team for 2009. Sophomore Monica Sacco (Union Springs H.S./Union Springs) is joined by freshmen Courtney Henry (Thousand Islands H.S./Clayton) and Kristen Cleveland (Candor H.S./Candor) as part of the 20-player all-MSAC team. The team was selected by the coaches from the seven MSAC soccer programs. Conference champion Finger Lakes Community College had the most selections with five. Broome Community College and Jefferson Community College each had five players chosen while Onondaga Community College had two. Cayuga Community College and Corning Community College each had a single player chosen.
 
Henry finished fourth in voting. She led TC3 in scoring with 34 points on 15 goals and four assists. Cleveland was TC3's third leading scorers with 20 points on six goals and eight assists. Sacco, a defender and team captain, was a team leader in minutes played.

Taber Named National Goalie of the WeekDRYDEN, N.Y. – Colby Taber (Charles O. Dickerson H.S./Trumansburg) has been named the NJCAA Division III Male Goalie of the Week. 
 
Taber earned his third shutout of the season in an 8-0 win against Cayuga Community College on October 1 as part of going 2-1 for the week. In the three games, he allowed just five goals on 25 shots, improving his personal record in goal to 9-3 on the season. His seasonal goals-against-average is just over one per game.
 
Taber is a freshman criminal justice major at TC3.

Courtney Henry Named Region III Athlete of the WeekDRYDEN, N.Y. – Courtney Henry (Thousand Islands H.S./Clayton) has been named the NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 20. She was chosen from all the female athletes among the 26 Region III colleges. 
 
Henry had a big week as the Panthers posted two wins. On Wednesday, she recorded her first collegiate hat trick, scoring three goals in the first half of a 3-2 in Onondaga Community College. On Friday Henry had an even bigger game, scoring another hat trick while also passing out two assists.
 
Henry is a liberal arts and sciences-liberal arts major at TC3. She is third in the region in scoring this season with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. TC3 is currently 5-4 overall and 4-3 in Region III play.

In the three games, he allowed just five goals on 25 shots, improving his personal record in goal to 9-3 on the season. His seasonal goals-against-average is just over one per game. People back to top 9/22/2009 Courtney Henry Named Region III Athlete of the Week DRYDEN, N.Y. – Courtney Henry (Thousand Islands H.S./Clayton) has been named the NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 20. She was chosen from all the female athletes among the 26 Region III colleges. Henry had a big week as the Panthers posted two wins. On Wednesday, she recorded her first collegiate hat trick, scoring three goals in the first half of a 3-2 in Onondaga Community College. On Friday Henry had an even bigger game, scoring another hat trick while also passing out two assists. Henry is a liberal arts and sciences-liberal arts major at TC3. She is third in the region in scoring this season with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. TC3 is currently 5-4 overall and 4-3 in Region III play. People back to top
