TC3's Hoffman Signs Contract with Random House Division for Latest Novel
DRYDEN, N.Y. Tompkins Cortland Community College English Instructor Cara Hoffman has signed a six-figure deal for publication of her novel, So Much Pretty, with Shaye Areheart Books at Random House. The novel is a work of literary noir about a young woman's disappearance from a rural New York town, an event that exposes the community's failure to acknowledge a murderer in their midst. Publication date is Spring 2011. Hoffman, a former newspaper journalist, based her novel on experiences she had living in Central New York and working as a reporter. "My inspiration for this novel," she said, "comes from a desire to expose the prevalence of violence against women, to show all the intimate details that comprise a culture of misogyny and silence we often take for granted." Hoffman had a non-traditional education. She dropped out of high school and spent her adolescence traveling and working in Greece and the Middle East. She returned home in the 90s and, while raising her son, took various jobs at community newspapers before being hired as county reporter for The Cortland Standard. During this time she also published two books on a small press and won several grants and awards for her fiction. "I had no desire to ever go to school." Hoffman said. "I knew I wanted to be a writer and I figured the best education would be reading and working in that field." Hoffman began what has grown to be a strong connection to TC3 when she met English professor Phil Tate in 2004. He connected her with Professor Lisa Ford, chair of the creative writing program. Ford invited Hoffman, who had just published her first novel NIKE, to come to the College as part of the new "visiting writer" program. Later she interned in Bruce Need's academic writing class. The experience helped change the path of her life. "I was amazed by the dedication of Lisa's writing students, and by the work she was doing with them," said Hoffman. "And I could relate to their experiences. My resistance to the idea of getting a degree began to change. I wanted to be a professor and I couldn't do it without the diploma." She applied to Goddard College's Master of Fine Arts Program, graduated in June 2009, and was hired to teach English at TC3. "One of the reasons I love teaching here is because my students bring so much to the table. They refuse to be limited by background or life's circumstances, and they're incredibly self-reliant, down-to-earth, and funny. TC3 students are some of the hardest working, most (real-world) worldly college kids in the region. All of us who teach here are lucky."

TC3.biz Honored by State Organization for Innovative Program
Hospitality Program Recognized
DRYDEN, N.Y. TC3.biz has received the Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY) James C. Hall Award for Credit Programming. The "TC3.biz Hospitality Certificate Program" was honored as an innovative development of a bridge between noncredit workshops and the College's hotel and restaurant management degree program. It was the only program in the credit category honored by CEANY. The hospitality certificate program allows participants to take the six-course workshop and earn a noncredit certificate and as many as six college credits in TC3's hotel and restaurant management program, should they decide to pursue a degree. The program was created in 2008 and continues to be offered. "There are a lot of people working entry level jobs in the hospitality industry who have not considered college," said TC3.biz Director Martha Hubbard. "We see them come for a non-credit workshop and find they are interested in pursuing more education in the field. This gives them a leg up as they start that process." The program was the result of an ongoing collaboration between TC3.biz and TC3 Hotel and Restaurant Management Program Chair Susan Stafford. It has produced a benefit for the entire program, not just the students taking advantage of the bridge. "This collaboration with TC3.biz helps not only the students entering the program through the TC3.biz workshops, but all of our students," said Stafford. "The students coming in through the TC3.biz program bring a vital viewpoint on topics we discuss in the classroom. They have worked in the field and offer industry networking and experiential input. The certifications offered by the National Restaurant Association in TC3.biz are extremely important for non-credit and credit students alike." The next running of the TC3.biz Hospitality Certificate program will be in the spring, with the series of six workshops beginning in March with "Understanding the Nature and Culture of Hospitality." "Business Ethics & Professionalism," "Greater Customer Connections," "Everyday Math and Money Skills," "ServSafe Food Handler in Charge," and "ServSafe Alcohol Service Training" follow, running through the end of April. The classes can be taken individually or as a series. For more information or to register, call TC3.biz at 607 844 6586.

CollegeNow@TC3 Hosts Professional Development Conference
Concurrent Enrollment Program Saves Local High School Students Millions of Dollars
DRYDEN, N.Y. CollegeNow@TC3 will host its first ever program-wide professional development conference Monday, August 24. Nearly 100 participants from more than 25 local school districts will attend the all-day conference on the TC3 main campus in Dryden. The conference will include sessions on specific fields of study led by TC3 faculty as well as general interest workshops. The CollegeNow concurrent enrollment program allows high school students to earn TC3 credits while taking classes either at their home high school or online. During the 2008-09 academic year, more than 3,000 high school students earned college credits for free through the CollegeNow program. The total number of credits earned was more than 17,500, representing at least $2.3 million in college tuition savings (based on TC3's tuition of $132 per credit). The classes are taught by high school teachers who are approved by TC3 and work with a college faculty member. In addition to providing a professional development opportunity for the teachers, the conference is a way to strengthen the connection between the college and the partner schools. "The professional development conference is something we've always wanted to do," says CollegeNow Associate Director Victoria Zeppelin. "The feedback we've received from our high school teachers is that they'd like more contact with the College. We established liaisons (TC3 faculty members who work directly with high school teachers in their field of study) a couple years ago and that has been very successful. The conference will help continue to build the relationship between the College and our partners, plus it will give the high school teachers the chance to meet and network with colleagues from other high schools who are teaching the same courses."

Veteran Hollywood Insider Speaks at TC3
Trumansburg Native Mike Kehoe Returns to Area to Announce Parternship with College
DRYDEN, N.Y. Mike Kehoe, a veteran writer, producer, and director, will speak at TC3 Friday, July 24. Kehoe, who also has worked as a crew member on several box-office hits, will offer his insight on several aspects of the film industry. The presentation, which is open to the public and of special interest for anyone thinking of pursuing a career in the field, is sponsored by the TC3 communication and media arts program. It will start at 7 p.m. in the TC3 Forum and will include opportunities for questions from the audience. Kehoe, a 1977 graduate of Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg, is looking to develop projects by Ithaca film makers. He also hopes to assist students from TC3 that have a desire to pursue a career in film making, through internships, jobs, and his extensive list of contacts at various studios. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our students," said TC3 instructor of communication and media arts Christine Guest. "To be able to hear someone with his credentials speak to them on our campus is significant, but to have him offer to collaborate with our program and help our students get into the field is simply incredible. We couldn't be more excited." Kehoe's career in Hollywood began as an assistant to Sylvester Stallone in the 1985 film "Rocky IV." He then worked as an assistant to writer Kevin Elder and director Sidney Furie on the 1986 film "Iron Eagle" before working on a number of independent features. In 1994, he formed Taughannock Entertainment and wrote, produced, and directed his first short film. "Second Dance" was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, premiering at Sundance and the Berlin Film Festival. He wrote and directed the feature film "Dominion" in 1995, followed by producing and directing more short films, including "The Dark Agent," which was accepted to the 2004 Comic Con Film Festival. Kehoe has worked closely with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Tom Cruise on "Jerry Maguire," "Mission: Impossible II," "Vanilla Sky," "The Last Samurai," "Collateral," and "Valkyrie." While working on the crew of "Mission: Impossible III" he secured a deal with Paramount and The Food Network to write, produce, and direct the special "Catering Impossible," featuring the cast of the feature film. Most recently, he worked with director J.J. Abrams on this year's hit "Star Trek." In all, Kehoe has worked on over 70 films across the United States as well as in New Zealand, Japan, China, Israel, and Mexico.
