TC3's Hoffman Signs Contract with Random House Division for Latest Novel

DRYDEN, N.Y. – Tompkins Cortland Community College English Instructor Cara Hoffman has signed a six-figure deal for publication of her novel, So Much Pretty, with Shaye Areheart Books at Random House.

The novel is a work of literary noir about a young woman's disappearance from a rural New York town, an event that exposes the community's failure to acknowledge a murderer in their midst. Publication date is Spring 2011.

Hoffman, a former newspaper journalist, based her novel on experiences she had living in Central New York and working as a reporter.

"My inspiration for this novel," she said, "comes from a desire to expose the prevalence of violence against women, to show all the intimate details that comprise a culture of misogyny and silence we often take for granted."

Hoffman had a non-traditional education. She dropped out of high school and spent her adolescence traveling and working in Greece and the Middle East. She returned home in the 90s and, while raising her son, took various jobs at community newspapers before being hired as county reporter for The Cortland Standard. During this time she also published two books on a small press and won several grants and awards for her fiction.

"I had no desire to ever go to school." Hoffman said. "I knew I wanted to be a writer and I figured the best education would be reading and working in that field."

Hoffman began what has grown to be a strong connection to TC3 when she met English professor Phil Tate in 2004. He connected her with Professor Lisa Ford, chair of the creative writing program. Ford invited Hoffman, who had just published her first novel NIKE, to come to the College as part of the new "visiting writer" program. Later she interned in Bruce Need's academic writing class.

The experience helped change the path of her life.

"I was amazed by the dedication of Lisa's writing students, and by the work she was doing with them," said Hoffman. "And I could relate to their experiences. My resistance to the idea of getting a degree began to change. I wanted to be a professor and I couldn't do it without the diploma." She applied to Goddard College's Master of Fine Arts Program, graduated in June 2009, and was hired to teach English at TC3.

"One of the reasons I love teaching here is because my students bring so much to the table. They refuse to be limited by background or life's circumstances, and they're incredibly self-reliant, down-to-earth, and funny. TC3 students are some of the hardest working, most (real-world) worldly college kids in the region. All of us who teach here are lucky."

TC3 Again Named Top A Digital Community College

DRYDEN, N.Y. – Tompkins Cortland Community College has once again been named a top digital community college by the Center for Digital Education and Converge magazine. TC3 placed second in the mid-sized college category based on the digital community college survey, which examined how colleges deploy technology to streamline operations and better serve students, faculty, and staff. With colleges grouped based on city and student population, TC3 finished behind only Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the category of schools with student populations of 3,000 to 7,500. TC3 finished third in that category last year, and was named the top college in small school category in 2005 and 2007.

The survey addressed multiple areas in digital technology, including online registration, distance learning, tutoring and advisory services, technology training for students and faculty, and Web 2.0 social and collaborative capabilities.

The Center for Digital Education is a premier resource for technology policy and utilization in K-12 and higher education. Marina Leight, vice president of the Center, said, "Community colleges, year after year, impress us as forward thinking and quick to adapt. Our survey results show overwhelmingly that community colleges are fast embracing cyber technologies in learning by using tools students are familiar with. Those institutions chosen as this year's top community colleges are exceptional examples of this investment in learning."

TC3 Hosts Day/Night College Fair October 20

Over 100 Colleges and Universities Represented

DRYDEN, N.Y. – Anyone looking for information about college has a great opportunity coming soon. On Tuesday, October 20, representatives from over 100 colleges and universities will be at Tompkins Cortland Community College for TC3's 26th Annual College Day/Night Program.

The day portion of the program is from noon to 2 p.m. and will be mostly attended by high school students from around the region. The evening session will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Both sessions will take place in the BorgWarner Morse TEC Field House in TC3's athletics facility and are free and open to the public.

Parents and students can ask college and university representatives about campus life, degree programs, course offerings, costs, financial aid, support services for students, entrance requirements, and their faculty.

"This is a chance to learn through personal discussion, not just by studying information in brochures and web sites," said Tom Streb, TC3 assistant director of admissions-external operations, who coordinates the program. "The process of choosing a college takes so much time and research, and programs like this really help students and parent get a great deal of information in a short time. In addition to being a resource for high school students, it's also a chance for TC3 students who want to transfer to gather information about four-year colleges and universities."

Traditionally over 1,500 high school students from around the region attend the program.
