TC3.biz Honored by State Organization for Innovative Program

Hospitality Program Recognized

DRYDEN, N.Y. – TC3.biz has received the Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY) James C. Hall Award for Credit Programming. The "TC3.biz Hospitality Certificate Program" was honored as an innovative development of a bridge between noncredit workshops and the College's hotel and restaurant management degree program. It was the only program in the credit category honored by CEANY.

The hospitality certificate program allows participants to take the six-course workshop and earn a noncredit certificate and as many as six college credits in TC3's hotel and restaurant management program, should they decide to pursue a degree. The program was created in 2008 and continues to be offered.

"There are a lot of people working entry level jobs in the hospitality industry who have not considered college," said TC3.biz Director Martha Hubbard. "We see them come for a non-credit workshop and find they are interested in pursuing more education in the field. This gives them a leg up as they start that process."

The program was the result of an ongoing collaboration between TC3.biz and TC3 Hotel and Restaurant Management Program Chair Susan Stafford. It has produced a benefit for the entire program, not just the students taking advantage of the bridge.

"This collaboration with TC3.biz helps not only the students entering the program through the TC3.biz workshops, but all of our students," said Stafford. "The students coming in through the TC3.biz program bring a vital viewpoint on topics we discuss in the classroom. They have worked in the field and offer industry networking and experiential input. The certifications offered by the National Restaurant Association in TC3.biz are extremely important for non-credit and credit students alike."

The next running of the TC3.biz Hospitality Certificate program will be in the spring, with the series of six workshops beginning in March with "Understanding the Nature and Culture of Hospitality." "Business Ethics & Professionalism," "Greater Customer Connections," "Everyday Math and Money Skills," "ServSafe Food Handler in Charge," and "ServSafe Alcohol Service Training" follow, running through the end of April.

The classes can be taken individually or as a series. For more information or to register, call TC3.biz at 607 844 6586.

Community Workshops Program Recognized as Among the Best in State

TC3.biz Honored for Collaboration with Trust Company, Chamber and Cayuga Radio

DRYDEN, N.Y. – TC3.biz has received the Continuing Education Association of New York's James C. Hall Award for Business Industry Collaboration. TC3.biz, the business development arm of Tompkins Cortland Community College, was honored for its partnership with Tompkins Trust Company, the Tompkins Chamber of Commerce, and Cayuga Radio Group on the "Community Workshops for Business Leaders: Helping Local Businesses Thrive" series.

The series offered quarterly programs of nationally-renowned speakers and presenters targeted to key decision makers. The goal of the series was to address "New Ways for New Times" - recruiting and retaining the workforce of today and tomorrow. To accomplish the goal, the workshops sought to build awareness, knowledge, community dialog, and a sense of urgency around the issues of a quickly changing workforce and succession planning.

The Continuing Education Association of New York presents annual awards in several categories. TC3.biz was recognized in the business/industry linkage category. To be eligible for the award, a program needs to be designed to provide continuing education services to existing companies and/or their employees. The "Community Workshops for Business Leaders" program did that, reaching over two dozen CEOs among the 60 participants.

The program was well received. "High-level decision makers in our community revealed that there was a lot they needed to learn about leading and managing their organizations, and in fact, recognized that now--more than ever--they needed to learn new skills, ideas, perspectives as the world of work was changing so quickly," said Susan Greener, TC3.biz business development and training specialist. "Assumptions about hiring, motiving, retaining workers today are no longer useful, as they had been for so many decades. We created a community of sharing and learning which did not exist prior."

"It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with TC3.biz to offer this workshop series for community leaders," said Greg Hartz, President and CEO of Tompkins Trust Company. "The TC3.biz staff has been instrumental in organizing the series - and truly a partner in developing a program that has received outstanding reviews."

The current four-part series concludes with a final workshop on January 26. "An Engaged Workforce and Business Success" will feature Mary Ebaugh, president of Hershey Consulting, talking about the importance of having employees engaged in their work. As a result of the success of this series, planning is underway for two additional workshops in 2009.
