Orientation

Orientation is like a scavenger hunt, but the students are looking for information rather than things. The students will learn things that will help them make better use of library and tutoring services throughout the semester and coming semesters as well.

Orientation to the Writing & Research Center is an integral part of the recommended curriculum for ENGL100. We prefer not to do orientation with other classes to avoid having students go through the same exercise multiple times. As with any other learning activity, it is important that you accompany your students and actively participate.

Here are some examples of questions students are asked to "scavenge" from our various service points.

1. Which magazines or journals might you seek information from during your college career? Why?

2. How much credit do you get on your TC3 ID card for free copies from the Commons computers and copier?

3. Where can you go for help researching your topic for a paper?

4. List the names of four handouts that the Writing & Research Center provides.

5. Name at least two writing tutors. Are they professional tutors or peer tutors?

6. What is the call number of Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved?

7. How do you renew a book before it is overdue without coming to the library?
