Instructional Services for FacultyWe are very excited to work with you. Here is a menu of the different ways we can assist your classes:
OrientationThis activity will help students get comfortable with the space and staff of the Baker Commons. Getting acquainted with us will be useful for students in all their classes so we suggest a visit early in the semester. Topic DevelopmentFrom general areas that spark their interest to more focused starting ideas, we will help your students develop topics suitable for their papers. Asking Meaningful Research QuestionsTo deepen the research process, we will guide your students in asking probing questions that will allow them to investigate and fully grasp their chosen issue. Tools for ResearchBooks, magazines, journals, databases…these are some of the resources students can use for their research projects. We will discuss and demonstrate several techniques for finding the information students need. Evaluating Sources"Is this article good for my paper?" "How can I tell if this author is reliable?" "Does this article support my ideas?" With the goal of getting students to think critically about what they read, we will help students answer these and other similar questions. Integrating SourcesAfter students have found and gathered their sources, they have to fit the information into their papers. To make this step feel less like a puzzle, we will share ideas and techniques on how to integrate and synthesize research materials. How to CiteFor some students, learning how to cite properly is like learning a new language. We can clarify and demystify this task for them by explaining the basic principles and reasons behind citation. The Tutor ConnectionStudent Assistants/Tutors in English 099 Reaching out to students in English 099, we can provide your classroom with a tutor or student assistant to assist your students directly and aid you in moderating peer-review sessions, small group discussions, or any similar activity. As much as possible, please contact us early in the semester to ensure the availability of tutors. Grammar MattersTo reinforce the use of proper grammar, we can tailor a session that will deal with the issues your students face. Our goal is to help students recognize and fix their own grammatical mistakes. Style in WritingWorking with you and using some of the texts you've assigned, we will visit your class to help your students make the vital connection between the style of their writing and the meanings they want to communicate. We will discuss the conceptual and emotional effects of sentence patterns and rhetorical devices. RevisionWith their final drafts in hand, we will guide your students in how to revise effectively and substantially. We will focus on thesis development and organization. How to Read a BookThe book is a unique structure containing information. We will help students "unpack" the content of a book by understanding how it is built.
