How Do I use the Nook?

What is a Nook?

The Nook is an eBook reader (also called an e-reader) sold by Barnes & Noble for reading books in an electronic format (eBooks).

Where can I borrow one?

You can get Nooks at the second floor services desk. Click here to see what is available.

How long can I borrow a Nook?

Currently, two Nooks are available for use within the Baker Commons for two hours at a time. Three other Nooks may be borrowed for three weeks at a time.

How do I read an eBook on the Nook?

  1. Touch the nook home button - looks like inverted U Home button located just above the color touchscreen.
  2. Tap my library on the color touchscreen.
  3. Be sure you are viewing My B&N Library for B&N eBooks. Others will be found in My Documents.
  4. Use the up or down arrow buttons to highlight the eBook you want to read.
  5. Tap the Select button on the color touchscreen.

How do I turn pages?

Use the previous (<) / next (>) page turn buttons on the sides of the Nook to turn pages while reading. You can also use the color touchscreen once it turns dark by swiping from right to left to turn the page forward. Swiping from left to right goes to the previous page.

How do I use the touchscreen?

To use the color touchscreen, slide your finger right to left to show more Home menu icons. Go from left to right to go back. Tap on an icon to open up that function on the Nook. The parts of the touchscreen menu are:

  • The Daily - shaped like a coffe cup the daily: unique content from Barnes & Noble, as well as subscriptions and lending notifications.
  • My Library - looks like books on a shelf my library: all of your eBooks, PDFs, and other documents.
  • Shop - stylized Nook logo shop: Barnes & Noble's eBookstore.
  • Reading Now - person and stylized nook logo reading now: shortcut to what you're currently reading.
  • Games - image of dice games: games. Good way to learn how to use the Nook.
  • Wi-Fi - signal image wifi: Wi-Fi (wireless local area network) settings.
  • Audio - image of musical notes audio: audio player controls for music and audio books.
  • Web - image of the world web: beta version basic web browser.
  • Settings - image of a gear settings: preferences and user settings.

Color Touch Screen Action Buttons:

  • Up (^) button to move up the reading screen.
  • Down (v) button to move down the reading screen.
  • Select (°) button to select an item on the screen or acts as the "enter" key.
  • Sliding Scrollbar to scroll up and down the screen.
  • Back (<) button to take you back to the previous screen.
