Pre-Course Assignments
Online pre-course assignments allow us to get to know each other. You’ll explore TC3, Dryden, Central New York and learn a little about US culture. We’ll learn more about you by way of a “statement of purpose” in which you express your personal goals for your time in the U.S.A., provide your Curriculum Vitae in English, complete some readings about academic culture of the U.S. and complete other assignments that will help you to benefit fully from the Summer Intensive ESL Institute.
Assignments can be broken down into four parts:
Part I) Program logistics, what to bring, become familiar with TC3 and the region and program details
Part 2) Introduce yourself
Part 3) Academic Culture in the USA
Part 4) Final logistics and program details to prepare to fully benefit from your program
Summer Intensive English Institute-Housing and Living
SIEI participants will be housed in one of the 7 residence halls on campus, a 10 minute walk from the Main Building and the Athletic Center. TC3 residence halls are apartment-style, containing a shared kitchen, shared bathroom and living area and four private bedrooms. Participants will be housed with other SIEI students.
Program-Related Trips
We realize that getting to know the culture of the USA and the local lifestyle and landscape must also happen outside of the classroom. For that reason, we’ve planned several trips to places such as Niagara Falls, other local colleges and universities, area businesses and other industries as well as other places of local interest. The cost of these program-related trips is included in the cost of the program. Space may be limited and participants may sign-up for a seat, starting on June 11, orientation day.
Optional Outings
Your classes will keep you very busy but we know that all work and no play equals dull. Therefore we’ve planned several trips designed just for fun, including Thursday evening “off-campus outings”, where you’ll have a chance to
- go bowling or play miniature golf
- see a local theater production
- see a free concert and dine out in Ithaca
- see a movie, have a drink on The Commons
- go to ‘salsa night’ at a nightclub
And other weekend excursions, where you can:
- shop at a factory outlet
- go to an amusement park
- go to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market and to area wineries to taste
There are additional fees associated with the “Optional Outings”. Depending on the activity, you may sign up in the Student Center or in the Global Connections office. (To be announced/TBA).
