Course Description

ESOL 095B

This is a continuation of ESOL 095A that is designed for non-native speakers of English who have some proficiency in conversational English. Students continue to gain proficiency in conversational listening, speaking, reading and writing, with particular emphasis on speaking fluently and correctly. In addition, students are introduced to limited and adapted academic English. Substantial outside preparation and lab work are required. Students will need to pass a speaking test at the end of this course in order to continue in the ESOL program at TC3. Prerequisite: Completion of ESOL 095A with a grade of C or better. 4 Equiv. Cr. This course is offered in the fall and spring semesters.

Listening

Students will be able to

  • Understand all discourse about personal situations and other everyday experiences spoken at normal conversational rates with limited need for repetition or rewording
  • Understand short, simplified academic lectures on familiar topics
  • Respond to ideas expressed in listening materials in writing

Speaking

Students will be able to

  • Demonstrate control of basic grammar and pronunciation when speaking in all discourse about personal situations and everyday experiences
  • Clarify and elaborate on meaning when necessary

Reading

Students will be able to

  • Read and understand typical news items, basic business letters, simple technical materials, classified ads, and school bulletins
  • Read and understand short, simplified prose and academic texts with support
  • Recognize different genres such as fiction, journalism, expository and persuasive writing
  • Respond to ideas expressed in reading materials in writing

Writing

Students will be able to

  • Write short dictations using familiar vocabulary with 70% accuracy
  • Write narratives with some control of basic grammar and sentence structure
  • Write journals and reflections for personal use
  • Write descriptions on familiar topics
  • Write reactions to reading and listening materials with good control of basic grammar
  • Distinguish different purposes in writing

Grammar

Students will be able to

  • Speak and write with control of basic grammar, including verb tenses, noun usage, and word order
  • Punctuate compound and complex sentences correctly
  • Use phrasal verbs
  • Construct simple passive sentences
  • Use gerunds and infinitives
  • Use participial adjectives
  • Write legibly and in proper format

Pronunciation

Students will be able to

  • Pronounce simple and complex vowels and consonants in all positions generally correctly
  • Pronounce word stress and intonation patterns generally correctly

Vocabulary

Students will be able to

  • Understand common idioms and expressions from the context
  • Guess the meaning of new vocabulary from the context by using synonyms, antonyms, and redundancy
  • Develop and use strategies for learning new vocabulary

Students will be able to

  • Read and understand charts, maps and graphs
  • Draw conclusions from narratives
  • Find main ideas
  • Detect emotional overtones
  • Derive factual information from materials
