![]() Preparing for Registration DayAcademic advisors play a major role in helping students prepare for registration day. Many advisors will use IQ Web to send an e-mail reminder to advisees and inform them of the advisor’s availability on registration day and in the weeks before that day. The advisor may wish to look up mid-term progress reports and attendance status while speaking with a student. If things are not going well in the student’s academic life, the advisor may be able to help the student explore the reasons why this is so. The student, with the advisor’s help, can try to learn what is working well in the current semester and think about how to apply successful habits, attitudes, and approaches in the new semester. If there is a chance that a course in the current semester will not be completed by the student, the advisor and student should make a “Plan B” of how to change the schedule to repeat any necessary courses, and drop any courses for which the prerequisite is not met. Getting authorized to register for the next semester is what motivates many students to meet with their advisors. The advisor may want to view this meeting as an opportunity to reach out to the student with any type of help the advisor believes is appropriate. This could be a great time to discuss the advisee’s career plans or to refer the student to resources such as the Baker Center, the Counseling, Career, and Transfer Center, Student Activities, and more. In helping the student to choose courses for a new semester, the advisor may need to clarify program requirements, general education requirements, and various college policies for the student. The advisor should pay careful attention to prerequisites and co-requisites, as well as the basic skill requirements for the courses the student wishes to take. Once the student has made a plan for the new semester, the advisor should authorize the student to register on IQ web, and also sign a completed registration form (the form will be a backup to the online registration, in case any system failures cause problems). You may find the registration checklist to be a useful guide as you meet with your advisees. |
