Advising Students Who Plan to Transfer

TOP TEN TRANSFER TIPS

It is no secret that TC3 is increasingly becoming students’ college of choice to begin their baccalaureate degree. Here is a list of transfer tips that will help your advisees navigate the road to a four-year degree!

  1. Students should begin planning for transfer during their first semester at TC3. Planning ahead gives students the opportunity to meet course requirements for their intended major at a four-year institution. An easy way for students to start the transfer process is by attending a transfer workshop in Counseling, Career and Transfer Services – Room 216.
  2. Encourage your advisees to discuss their educational goals with you. Are they in the right degree program for their interests/goals?
  3. Students need to research requirements for admission/major at four-year institutions. Direct students to the College/Career Information Center – Room 216.
  4. Students can fulfill TC3 degree requirements and take the courses they need for transfer. Students need to choose electives carefully.
  5. Make sure that your advisees have a copy of their TC3 degree audit sheet. They can keep track of their progress and see how the courses they need for transfer fit into their degree program.
  6. “Associate degrees do not transfer, course credits do.” Courses are evaluated for transfer credit on an individual basis regardless of whether or not a student has an Associate degree.
  7. Encourage students to schedule an appointment with a transfer counselor, Meg Garvey or Heather Stevens, in Counseling, Career & Transfer Services.
  8. Tell your advisees to take advantage of TC3’s Fall College Day/Night, Spring Transfer Day and for students planning to transfer to SUNY Cortland, the “Advisor-in-Residence” program. Three times each semester a representative from SUNY Cortland comes to TC3 to meet individually with students to discuss transfer opportunities. (Direct students to Room 216.)
  9. Students need to ask questions. Making assumptions in the transfer process is equivalent to a four-letter word!
  10. Tell your advisees to begin planning for transfer during their first semester at TC3. (This is a repeat of tip #1, but early planning is the key to a seamless transfer!)
