Students Taking Pre-College Courses

Advising students who are academically under-prepared and taking pre-college courses can be challenging. The primary goal for advisors is to assist the students in selecting the individual courses and a total course load that is appropriate based on their current level of skills in reading, writing, and math.

Students taking pre-college courses may express some of the following concerns: that they are not getting credit toward their degree for pre-college courses, that taking the pre-college courses means extended time to complete their degree, that they are not taking any courses (or all the courses) planned for the semester in their program, or that they have already mastered the skills taught in the pre-college courses.

Because of the complex nature of advising students taking pre-college courses, several people are available to consult with advisors on individual situations as they arise. Bruce Need is available for questions related to ENGL 099 and Rick Grossman is available for questions related to RDN G099 and RDNG 116. In addition, Jim Hull and Janet Swinnich are available to assist with advising-related questions related to under-prepared students.

Several sections of the TC3 Advisor Website may be very helpful in addressing common questions and concerns.

  • Developmental Courses - This section has a list of questions and answers about developmental education (courses for students who are academically under-prepared). This section includes explanations on how and why students are placed in pre-college courses, what “equivalent credits” are, what happens if you fail a pre-college course, etc.
  • Basic Skills Guidelines - This section has information on the basic skills guidelines system including the basic skills levels for individual courses and lists of appropriate courses for students taking two or three pre-college courses.
  • Assessment and Placement Information - This section explains the assessment scores and related placement in ENGL, MATH, and RDNG courses.
