![]() Resources & ReferralsStudents will seek help from advisors in interpreting program requirements, course sequencing, career information, and tips for planning to transfer. Assisting a student in selecting appropriate courses in the correct order may be the most often performed task of the academic advisor. Tracking progress toward a degree and keeping in mind the basic skills required and the prerequisites for each course are at the core of the advisor’s responsibilities. Ideally, when a student and advisor meet to plan for a new semester or summer session, the student will make wise course choices with the advisor’s assistance. Any encounter with an advisee may become an opportunity to discuss many other issues beyond the immediate task of preparing to register. The student can be encouraged to think about what other steps he or she needs to take to prepare for life after TC3 (whether the goal is employment, transfer, or other). The advisor may be able to help the student choose extracurricular activities, such as volunteer work or student organizations, appropriate to the student’s pursuit of his or her long-term goals. Students may present to the academic advisor issues which necessitate the assistance of others, both within TC3 and in the community. For help with personal issues, career or job placement, or transfer planning, send students to the Counseling, Career and Transfer Services office. For free tutoring in many subject areas, or help with time management, study skills, or test anxiety, send students to the Baker Center for Learning. For other ideas about where to send students who need various types of assistance, consult our resource directory, list of program chairs and coordinators, and the TC3 online directory. |
