Course Selection

Assisting a student in selecting appropriate courses in the correct order may be the most often performed task of the academic advisor. Tracking progress toward a degree and keeping in mind the basic skills required and the prerequisites for each course are at the core of the advisor’s responsibilities. Ideally, when a student and advisor meet to plan for a new semester or summer session, the student will make wise course choices with the advisor’s assistance.

Any encounter with an advisee may become an opportunity to discuss many other issues beyond the immediate task of preparing to register. The advisor can help the student to make a long-range plan of when and how the student will achieve each degree requirement. The advisor can help the student determine how many credits should be taken each semester or session, given the other demands on the student’s time and energy such as work, volunteering, activities, athletics and family. The student can be encouraged to think about what other steps he or she needs to take to prepare for life after TC3 (whether the goal is employment, transfer, or other). The advisor may use the conversation as a chance to inform the student of the diverse extracurricular opportunities and many resources available to support student success at TC3.

This portion of the web site will provide many of the details you will need to assist the student in selecting the right courses.
