Online Course Placement

Whether a student is interested in online learning, or already registered for one of our online courses, please remember that you should make sure the student is aware that he or she should possess the following basic skills in order to succeed in an online learning environment:

  • Basic skills with computers and the Internet
  • Strong skills in reading and comprehension
  • Strong college writing skills
  • Great motivation and self-discipline
  • Easy and frequent access to a computer with word processing and an Internet connection.

Online course-study requires the learner to check into their course at least 4-5 times a week for about an hour each session (depending on the course-work/load) and participate in discussions, case studies, and on-line lectures/presentations. If even a week goes by without logging in, the learner will fall far behind in the course and, consequently, have a difficult time catching up.

Online course-study also demands strong reading and writing skills on the part of the learner. Communication is no longer face-to-face in this environment, so, naturally, the learner must be able to clearly communicate in writing through E-mail and discussion boards. Also, the learner must possess strong reading skills as much of the material provided by the instructors is in written documents.

If you are unsure as to whether or not your advisee meets these basic skill levels, speak with the coordinator of online learning services (Ext. 4297) or the instructional software specialist (Ext. 4357). The college's e-TC3 site also includes presentations, tips and FAQ documents that answer most of the questions one would have regarding online learning at TC3.

If a need cannot be met through TC3’s offerings, some students may find a course they seek at SLN.
