• Auto TechnologyDescription: Students learn to repair foreign and domestic cars and light trucks using the latest technologies and computerized diagnostic equipment. Successful graduates are eligible to take the certification examinations offered by the Auto motive Service Excellence (ASE) and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Inspection for License examination. Throughout the two-year program, students’ gain daily practical experience working on vehicles donated by major auto manufacturers, vehicles provided by the Career and Tech Center and the students’ personal vehicles. Selected students may be eligible for clinical experience at local repair facilities. Students have successfully competed at the regional, state, and national levels for scholarships and other prizes. TC3 credits are transferable to most colleges, including the entire SUNY system. • Auto Body TechnologyDescription:From a fender bender to a major mishap, repairing, restoring, and rebuilding damaged auto bodies is what this course will teach you to do. You will learn the technologies of complete auto collision repair: sheet metal work and frame repair, painting and refinishing, exterior and interior trim and glass, mechanical and electrical adjustments and repairs. You will also practice the art of customizing, estimating repair costs, and how to manage your own shop. In addition, students install windows and doors as well as applying interior and exterior trim and molding. Students learn painting, staining and how to finish drywall. It is helpful for students to have basic math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students may take either the Finish or Rough Carpenter course as their first year of the program. TC3 credits are transferable to most colleges, including the entire SUNY system. •Computer TechnologyDescription: Students have the opportunity to learn a large variety of software programs, network operation and management (Novell Network Administration, Windows NT Server, Linux) hardware and software troubleshooting, Internet use and web page design, local and long-distance e-mail, Windows and DOS operating Systems, and a variety of peripherals including scanners, CD ROMS, modems, color/laser printers, and digital cameras. From manicuring to hair coloring, perming to styling, students get the full range of skills and hours to prepare them for the N.Y.S. licensing exam. The program consists of practical hands-on training and theory work, field trips to beauty and styling shows, and presentations by guest speakers from the cosmetology field. Instruction in show management and communication skills prepares students to handle the business portion of working in a salon. Job seeking skills such as resume writing and interviewing are also taught. They learn how to prepare both short order and quantity cooking. Breads, pastries, entrees, soups, salads and desserts are included in menus selected and prepared by students. Equipment operation and safety are also taught. There is a great deal of emphasis on building social skills, working as team members, following directions and exhibiting positive work attitudes. Second year students are responsible for the complete operation of the “Sun Room”, the school’s on-campus restaurant. Capable students may also do internships in culinary arts related businesses. This is a rapidly growing field and one of our most popular programs. There is a $30 fee for a uniform. TC3 credits are transferable to most colleges, including the entire SUNY system. •Early Childhood DevelopmentDescription: Early childhood education provides students who want to work with young children with an understanding of the physical, emotional and intellectual development of children. Students learn about the characteristics and behavioral needs of three and four year olds, and how to care for them in a nursery school setting. Three days a week, students operate a nursery school for local children. In Early Childhood Work Experience, the second year of the program, students gain hands-on experience through internships at local nursery schools, childcare settings and elementary schools. Good communication skills, both written and oral are important skills needed to succeed in this program, along with a genuine interest in children. Safety is stressed in learning how to install standard equipment used in the industry, such as switches, receptacles, lighting and meters. Students will use instruction in blue print reading and electrical plans to wire a modular home on the Tech Center campus. The first year of the program concentrates on residential wiring and the second year focuses on the commercial and industrial wiring. TC3 credits are transferable to most colleges, including the entire SUNY system. •Graphic CommunicationsDescription: In Commercial Art, students design items such as advertisements, calendars, posters, brochures, greeting cards, T-shirts, packages, menus, logos, etc.---all of which can be commercially printed. Illustrations for designs can be created by technical processes used in the Commercial Art industry. Students do not need to have any computer experience to take this class. Communication Design is the second year of this program. Students design mostly for electrical media including computer animation, digital audio, video and digital photography. Students create advanced computer graphics and publication design, do complex color scanning and image manipulation, make their own CD-ROMs and, also, learn chemical photography with a professional photographer. For many projects, students use independent learning processes used in the profession. Included in this course is a unit on how to start a design business and how to do technical troubleshooting. Students who have a strong background in Macintosh computers and graphics can take Communication Design as a one-year course. Instruction includes preventive maintenance, diagnostic service, overhaul and repair operations. Students receive classroom-based theory instruction that they then apply to hands-on lab work in the shop. This program is unique in that it offers a one-year or two-year option. In this program you will explore a variety of health care-related jobs and work in a variety of work settings. The first semester prepares students for several on-site internships in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and health care agencies. Whenever possible students with a specific internship interest are accommodated. TC3 credits are transferable to most colleges, including the entire SUNY system. •NursingDescription: For the student interested in the health field as a supportive, direct care provider, this class provides theory and practical hands-on experience for the care of individuals in the hospitals, long term care facilities, and private homes. First semester is class work and simulated laboratory practice. The student is introduced to multiple nursing care procedures, ethical and legal aspects of health care, basic knowledge of body structures and functions, fundamentals of health promotion, and common signs of health alteration and illness. Problem solving skills and communication techniques are also introduced as applicable to the nursing assistant role in the health care setting. Second semester is class/lab work covering vital signs, CPR and first aid. Students also have a clinical component in area health care settings providing care and knowledge acquired in class. This program prepares students for entry into the work force as CAN, as well as providing a basis for exposure to other health related disciplines. Buildings, roads, bridges, cars, chips, airplanes and virtually every piece of durable equipment owes it structure to the certified welder. The Tech Center Welding program will teach you skills such as MIG and TIG welding and brazing in this growing career field. Your training will include the operation of welding and metal fabrication machinery. Blueprint reading and shop theory. Students learn contemporary metal joining, cutting and reinforcing processes used in manufacturing and fabricating. This program is designed for college bound students who have a strong interest in research and experimentation in the biological sciences and is intended to integrate the required senior year courses of English, Government and Economics with advanced concepts in Biology. The rigorous, balanced curriculum and applied learning approach provides opportunities for students to appreciate career roles in the sciences, and to work on projects that extend their knowledge in new areas. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of Cornell experiences varying from field trips to research rotations. A portion of the program revolves around the rotations in various disciplines in horticulture, animal/veterinary science, and agronomy. Students must integrate lectures, daily experiences and required daily readings in essays and research issues related to their experiences in laboratories. This program will introduce students to scientific research, allow them to interact with members of research teams and learn the process of scientific discovery. By visiting the different research laboratories, students can see the logical transition from basic science to applied science and technology transfer. The applied learning approach integrates the required senior year courses of English, Government and Economics, with Anatomy and Physiology and Advanced Topics in Health Sciences. Students in New Visions: Health Career Explorations will be exposed to such fields as nuclear medicine, electrocardiography, pharmacology, physical therapy, neurosurgery, and emergency medicine through rotations, guest speakers and field trips. Throughout these experiences, students will apply principles of anatomy and physiology, economics and public policy. New Visions students can expect a rigorous, extensive and diverse curriculum. Progressing through rotations, they observe and participate in departments such as Same Day Surgery, Outpatient Services, Surgicare and the Convenient Care Center. Rotations in areas such as the laboratory, sterile processing, vascular lab, human resources, environmental services, and infection control will provide students with opportunities to learn about ancillary and support services related to the medical sciences. In the fast-paced, demanding program students earn what is required of professionals in the health care and medical sciences, and how their education is applied to daily, real-life situations. Students accomplish this through integrating assigned readings, essays, research and debates into their rotations, by interacting with physicians, administrative personnel, support staff and by working with many other health care professionals.
