Mentors and Advisors

Role of the Advisor:

This should be a person who is familiar with the skills the student possesses. If the advisor is placing the student into a course with high reading comprehension requirements (most online courses have this), they should be someone who is reliably familiar with the student’s reading comprehension levels. A counselor acting as advisor should consider consulting with the appropriate subject teachers to check on specific skills and abilities.

This person should be willing to become familiar with the skill expectations and pre-requisites systems that TC3 has in place. Please read this summary of college level skills – each of these is expected for every student in an online course. All online students need to have excellent reading comprehension as well.

The advisor should also read this tip sheet and go over these talking points with all students. Students should be made aware of the importance of their grades in these courses before they sign up.

The CollegeNow staff is available to assist high school advisors with any questions that come up. In cases where the student's skills are uncertain, we would be happy to provide a skills assessment exam for the student.
