2009 High School Graduates Earn Over 16,000 College Credits from TC3June 9, 2009DRYDEN, N.Y. —High school seniors throughout the area are getting a head start on college through Tompkins Cortland Community College's CollegeNow program, with 1,728 seniors earning on average 9.6 college credits before their high school graduation. More than 390 students have completed more than 15 credits - the equivalent of a full college semester. This not only gives students and their parents an opportunity to save money, but also gives students increased flexibility when they attend college in the fall. In Newfield, 55 of the school's 68 graduating seniors earned credits, with 23 of the seniors earning enough to complete a college semester, or more. "This program is allowing our students to begin their higher education careers sooner, complete them faster, and it is saving families thousands of dollars," said Bill Hurley, superintendent of Newfield schools. Throughout the area, more than 16,591 credits were earned by high school students. More than 70 students earned 30 or more credits, and 10 earned 50 or more credits through CollegeNow. "Considering college tuition costs, this is a tremendous way to maximize district spending - an additional benefit to the community," said Mary Hibbard, superintendent of Whitney Point Schools.
