Liberal Arts and Sciences - Childhood Education ‘07

Amber Coulthart is one of those special students…the kind that leaves a lasting impression. Thus, it makes perfect sense that she’s chosen childhood education as her career path.

A member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, Amber earned her associate in science degree in liberal arts and sciences – childhood education from TC3 in May 2007 and will continue her studies at SUNY Cortland. She’s known from the time she was a young child that she wanted to be a teacher.

“Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be a teacher,” says Amber. “I’ve known that since I was 5-years old. It really came easy for me and through high school I concentrated on it. I worked with kids and worked at camps.

“I tried to get myself exposed (to teaching) as much as I could,” she continued. “So I think I was prepared to come to TC3. And also, with sports…in high school I really concentrated on them. It kept me focused. I like that a lot. It gave me that competitive edge.”

A native of Oneida, N.Y., Amber came to TC3 as a recruited softball player and turned out to be one of the admission office’s best recruiters, serving as the student coordinator of the TC3 Ambassador program.

“TC3 softball has definitely been the best experience of my life,” Amber says. “I’ve developed wonderful friendships that will probably last a lifetime. I’ve also bonded greatly with my coach. I think being on a sports team ties you right in with everything at the school.”

Among the many things Amber likes about TC3 are the smaller class sizes and the family feeling she gets from the faculty and staff.

“TC3 is special to me,” says Amber, who was a member of TC3’s Alpha Gamma Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national academic honor society. “When I came here I realized how close everybody was. I felt very comfortable right away.

“I was very close with faculty right away,” says Amber. “I enjoy going to class. I look forward to it. I’m not just a number in a classroom; I’m a person. I like the fact that (the faculty) know me personally. That’s inspired me a lot.”

And now that she’s earned her TC3 degree, Amber is ready to take the next step toward fulfilling her lifelong dream of being a teacher.

“I’m really excited about being a teacher,” she says. “I like to compete with other students and I like to get good grades. TC3 has pushed me to be more than I was in high school. And I think that has made me more prepared to go to Cortland.”

Amber has already left a lasting impression on the faculty, staff, and her fellow students at TC3. And there’s little doubt she’ll have the same effect on those she comes in contact with in the future.
