Student Writing Showcase Winners Announced

The Twenty-First Tompkins Cortland Community College Student Writing Showcase has produced three winners!

The winners of the 2018 Student Writing Showcase are Theodora Verhagen, Kathryn Wyly, and Matthew Evans. "This year we had many exceptional entries from a wide variety of subjects, including history, sociology, creative writing, and biology," said Kimari Johnson, associate professor of English and Showcase organizer. "The top papers were so close in quality that I had to have an additional reading to break ties. Most of the readers, who are also from a variety of disciplines, stated that they really enjoyed reading the papers. My favorite part is seeing the courses and teachers who inspired such noteworthy writing. I also like how excited students are about the chance to be recognized and, of course, win a cash prize!"

The annual contest is an opportunity for Tompkins Cortland students to submit work they have completed for a course at the College over the past year. Sponsored by the English and Humanities Academic Division, authors of the top three papers receive prizes of $125, $100, or $75. The winning writings will also be added to the College Library's archives.

“It’s always satisfying to participate in activities that promote students and their work,” said Johnson.
