 Tutoring at the Baker Center
Tutoring at the Baker Center is all done on a drop in basis by peer (student) tutors and professional tutors. The tutors all function as guides and coaches; they facilitate learning and encourage students to become successful, independent learners. The center's 20-25 peer tutors assist students with their understandings of course/subject specific content, study skills, writing skills, and basic skills (note-taking, time management, etc.).
Qualifications for Becoming a Peer Tutor
All tutors must provide faculty references, must maintain at least a 3.0 in content area and must be in good academic standing. We look for applicants strong in both content area and interpersonal skills. If you are interested, stop by the Baker Center and fill out an application or print them off here. Note that there are three different forms.
You can drop your application off at the center in room 130. When you stop in to the center, try to touch base with our tutor coordinator so she can meet you and then have you in mind when making up the tutoring schedules. If you prefer to mail the application in, send it to:

The following list will give you idea of our expectations for tutors.
General Tutor Duties
- Arrive promptly for your shift.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming demeanor at all times.
- Respect students’ rights to confidentiality.
- Help foster independent learning by circulating and allowing students time to work on their own.
- Complete all aspects of required tutor-training sessions to learn about policies and procedures, to learn tutoring strategies, and to share experiences and suggestions with other tutors.
- New tutors will meet twice each semester — during the fifth and 10th weeks — with a Baker Center professional staff member (mentor) for training and evaluation. Returning student tutors will meet once with their mentors during the fifth week for evaluation.
- Fill in and sign time card and sign in sheet.
- Read notices/messages placed in your mail box and on the sign-in table.
- If you need to be absent, arrange for another tutor to cover and let us know.
- Check appointment book for daily updates. (For example, tutors out sick or late.)
- Wear nametag and report to lab area on time.
- Clean up lab area upon arrival and departure (Remove used scratch paper; arrange and organize books/texts in the area; replace pens/pencils; push in chairs; etc).
- Remind students to sign in and pick up "name label." Remind students to sign out as well.
- Check out books to students by collecting student ID.
- Enforce the TC3 and BCL computer use policy. (Academic use only)
- When tutoring business is low or non-existent, check with the secretary or one of the mentors for other tasks.
- Refer students, when appropriate, to Baker Center staff professionals or other college services.
- Tutor online as needed.
- Inform or consult with a professional or certified tutor if any problems are encountered.
