Adult General Education Development Prep Program

Tompkins Cortland Community College and TST BOCES have established the Adult General Educational Development Prep program to help students prepare for and successfully complete the GED. This program is for you if you do not have a high school diploma and you are:

  • Interested in attending college
  • Looking to find a new job
  • Building your resume to advance your career with your current employer

The GED exam is a national test that measures the mastery of basic skills and general knowledge that are acquired in a four-year high school education. The GED consists of five tests:

  • Writing (including an essay)
  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Literature and the arts
  • Math

The credential received for passing the GED exam is widely recognized by colleges, training schools, trade unions, and employers as equivalent to a high school diploma. Many four-year colleges and some branches of the military require a semester or two at a community college such as TC3 in addition to a GED diploma.

  • When you enter the Adult GED Prep program you are tested to find a starting point in subject matter that is covered on the GED tests.
  • You will meet on a daily basis with your instructor to review the academic subjects tested by the GED.
  • The classes include both individual and group instruction, with self-pacing the norm.
  • We will help you plan what to do after you complete the GED.
  • Most people are ready to sit for the GED exam in four to six months.
  • Passing the GED qualifies you for admission to TC3.
