![]() Computer ForensicsA.A.S. DegreeMore and more crimes are committed with the aid of computers. Whether they are used in the commission of the crime, as in E-mail harassment or stalking, or used for keeping records of illegal activities such as gambling and embezzlement, the computer must be seized and analyzed. This degree program will help you learn how to provide a secure computer environment and learn techniques for collecting and analyzing computer-related evidence. You will be prepared for an entry-level position in a computer forensics lab, a member of a corporate security team that monitors and investigates suspicious activity, or to enter the law enforcement field. Requirements include a combination of criminal justice and computer technology courses to help you develop the skills needed to work in this growing field. An emphasis on social science coursework is included in the 22 liberal arts credits. The remaining 40 credits include criminal justice courses such as Introduction to Criminal Investigation and Introduction to Criminal Justice. Computer information systems courses will include operating systems and network design. Intensive research skills will be developed throughout these courses. A dedicated lab provides hands-on experience with investigative tools and evidence gathering. Computer support specialists/analysts and technicians are listed among the fastest growing occupations in both the Southern Tier (includes Tompkins and Tioga counties) and the Central Region (includes Cortland county). Transfer OptionsWith such a new field, there are few existing educational programs in computer forensics at colleges and universities. Fortunately, three four-year schools in New York offer a related bachelor’s degree. Hilbert College, SUNY Farmingdale, and Utica College at Syracuse University have developed degree programs in economic crime investigation and related fields. Additionally, Champlain College in Vermont has a computer forensics bachelor’s degree that is offered on campus or online.
