Biotechnology

A.S. Degree

The Biotechnology degree program is designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year institution as a Biotechnology or Biology major. The curriculum includes exposure to the business side of the field in order for students to gain an appreciation of intellectual property rights, value of innovation and driving forces of the industry.

The A.S. degree in Biotechnology will allow students to develop marketable job skills while incorporating all of the skill and theory required for transfer to a four-year degree program.

The Certificate also incorporates laboratory modules with hands-on training in molecular biology and cell culture techniques; required skills and knowledge in biotechnology that may enhance career opportunities and advancement to individuals currently employed in the work force and students majoring in other disciplines of study.

Students currently enrolled at Cornell University, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, and Wells College have taken courses from the core curriculum at TC3 to round out their undergraduate education, change their field of study, and/or facilitate entry into graduate level programs.

Academic Recommendations

Although not required for entry into the program, it is recommended that entering students have successfully completed high school biology and chemistry. In addition, to successfully complete the biotechnology degree requirements and transfer to an upper division institution at full junior status may require the student to start at the pre-calculus or calculus level in mathematics. If a student lacks sufficient mathematics and science preparation, he or she may receive instruction at TC3, but it may take more than two years to complete the A.S. biotechnology degree. Conversely, students receiving college credit for advanced placement achievement testing may pursue Honors electives, independent study, or pursue a certificate in business to enhance their A.S. biotechnology degree.

Career Opportunities

The market for biotechnology technicians is rapidly expanding in both the public and private sectors. There are niche markets that supply the biotech industry that can be exploited by the entrepreneur looking to start-up a small business venture. Biotechnology is applied in all sectors of the medical, food, and agricultural industries. New York State has developed several biotechnology corridors and small business incubators in anticipation of rapid growth in these sectors. In the 12 county central NY region there are 172 companies, employing over 6,000 persons in the biosciences with an average salary of $43,909, 30% higher that the regional average. Career opportunities exist as bench scientists, quality control/assurance technicians, and in areas related to clinical trials, diagnostics, and bioethics. Motivated students have been able to procure part-time employment in their field prior to graduation.
