Creative Writing

Certificate

Writers are integral members of the collaborative teams creating content for print publications, film, television, radio, and new media. Put simply, the story comes first!

This certificate provides course work that encourages writing proficiency, creative expression, literary scholarship, and critical thinking. You will develop your voice as you share and critique writing in workshops, participate in public readings, conference with faculty mentors, and interact with visiting writers.

You may select the Prose and Poetry Concentration or the Screenwriting Concentration. Screenwriting courses are offered online through the SUNY Learning Network (SLN). You may combine the certificate with an associate degree in communications, graphic design, new media, photography, web design, or other area of interest.

Career Opportunities

Publication/production courses, project/portfolio development, and internship opportunities help you prepare your work for submission to appropriate writing markets. Students completing the certificate in combination with a degree program will be prepared for careers as authors and editors for the arts and entertainment industry. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for writers with web experience is increasing due to growth in online publications.
