An appreciation for opportunityMeena Yousufzai

Podcast

Meena Yousufzai was welcomed to the College community in 2009 under sponsorship by the AMZ Enterprise Foundation and The School of Leadership Afghanistan. She brings to TC3 a unique perspective and appreciation for opportunity that is at the core of TC3's commitment to its Global Connections program. "I remember often going to class early and looking out of the huge class window to see the dozens of students marching into school. I knew a lot of those girls would drop out and get married, some would become teachers – the only job a lot of men would allow their wives to have – but some would leave their marks on history as great leaders. I always asked myself, would I be one? I never cared that I was a girl and that I would face many more challenges than others. I always knew my causes were far greater than my challenges and fears."

"I was very young when my family immigrated to Pakistan, but we lived partly in Afghanistan and partly in Pakistan. Women were forbidden by the Taliban government to attend school or have a career so Pakistan was an escape for us to be able to attend school, where my siblings and I attended immigrant schools."

"I believe liberal arts teaches you the art of thinking and gives you a broader picture of the world issues. I hope to use my degree in service of other Afghans, and to share the problems and responsibilities Afghanistan is facing alongside my Afghan brothers."
