![]() Alumni Spotlight: Jason van Staveren
We asked him five questions about himself, his life and his experiences with TC3. The following are his answers. Please tell us about yourself.I came to TC3 in 2000 after seven years of working in the food service industry. I spent several years at TC3 and served as treasurer of the Art Works club and on the Faculty Student Association Board of Directors. I graduated with an associate's degree in photography-new media in December 2003 as a member of Phi Theta Kappa and received the Alumni Association Award, the Presidential Citation and the SUNY Chancellor's Award. This May I will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts degree in film, photography and visual arts from the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, where I maintain a 3.89 GPA, am a member of Phi Kappa Phi and a Friends of Ithaca College Scholar. What are you doing now?I work half-time as the staff photographer for Buzz Entertainment Guide and gotbuzzed.com while attending school and am currently seeking a full-time position in the Ithaca area. To-date what is your biggest accomplishment? My photographic work has been exhibited in several group shows in conjunction with IC classes and was recently awarded honorable mention at the State of the Art annual juried photography show. I have also made a number of films at Park, a few of which I am particularly proud of. What is your fondest memory of TC3?It is hard to narrow it down to one moment, so here are a few:
Who were your favorite professors?Nick Klimaszewski who showed infinite patience with outlandish ideas; Keith Millman who understands what it means to push work out with little or no sleep; Chris Xaver, a die hard supporter and Ron Starmer for a brisk introduction to film atudies. Also, Ralph Shortell and Robin Slocum in the activities office. Without their help, encouragement, and faith, I would not have achieved all I did at TC3. Other comments, thoughts?TC3 came along at the perfect time in my life. It is an honor to give back to the place and people that helped me so much. Remember, it is NEVER to late to return to school. Strive to improve and challenge yourselves daily. Start slow, try auditing a class and take a subject you really love. Getting back into the "college" groove will become so much easier, and TC3 is the place to do it.
