Tutoring at the Baker Center
Tutoring at the Baker Center is done on a drop-in or appointment basis by peer (student) tutors, para-professional, and professional tutors. The tutors all function as guides and coaches; they facilitate learning and encourage students to become successful, independent learners. The center's tutors assist students with their understandings of course/subject specific content, study skills, writing skills, and basic skills (note-taking, time management, etc.).
Qualifications for Becoming a Peer Tutor
All tutors must provide faculty references, must maintain at least a 3.0 in content area, a 2.5 overall GPA and must be in good academic standing. We look for applicants strong in both content area and interpersonal skills. If you are interested, fill out an application electronically or print one off from a link below. You can fill out your application electronically, save it to your computer, and then email it back to Marilyn as an attachment. Alternately, you could print the application, fill it out, and then drop it off at the Baker Commons. When you stop in to the center, try to touch base with our tutor coordinator, Marilyn Webb, so she can meet you and then have you in mind when making up the tutoring schedules. The following list will give you idea of our expectations for tutors.
General Tutor Duties
- Arrive promptly for all shifts and wear name tag.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming demeanor at all times.
- Respect students’ rights to confidentiality.
- Help foster independent learning by circulating and allowing students time to work on their own.
- Complete all aspects of required tutor-training sessions to learn about policies and procedures, to learn tutoring strategies, and to share experiences and suggestions with other tutors.
- Each semester, complete a self-evaluation and meet with a Baker Center professional staff member (mentor) to review the mentor's evaluation and to discuss the tutor's growth & development in the role.
- Correctly fill in paper sign-in sheets and complete the online 'time-sheet' to correctly correspond with paper sign-in sheet.
- Read notices/messages placed in your name tag/mail box.
- Notify Tutoring Center if advance if missing a shift.
- Clean up lab area upon arrival and departure (Remove used scratch paper; arrange and organize books/texts in the area; replace pens/pencils; push in chairs; etc).
- Remind students to sign in and pick up "name label." Remind students to sign out as well.
- When there are no students to tutor in the drop-in lab, work on tutoring journal or ask one of the professional tutors for something to do.
- Refer students, when appropriate, to Baker Center staff professionals or other college services.
- Keep appropriate notes and records as instructed.
- Inform or consult with a professional or certified tutor if any problems are encountered.
